The beams of sunlight shone upon the wisps of mint hair of the boy seated across from him. A smile was spread kindly across his fair face. His mouth moved but he couldn't make out the meaning of the words that spilled out of it. His words seeped into the wooden table separating the pair. A set of crystal blue eyes settled on his features, examining them. Not critiquing, but appreciating them. His eyes hovered to the reflection of the mint haired upperclassman on the window beside them. But however the reflection of him could not not compare to the real one in front of him. He observed as the upperclassman gripped his sweet beverage and lifted the lavender drink and sipped. Dark tapioca balls disappeared from the bottom of the cup as he continued to sip.
Taro boba - Rei's favorite.
Rei's mouth continued to move shortly after setting the cup down. He then heard a word he recognized Rei had said.
"Arlo,"
His name being said managed to catch his attention. Arlo blinked a few times before snapping back into reality. "What?" He asked blankly as his gaze shifted to his cup of coffee before him. "I asked you a question," Rei chuckled and took another sip of his boba."I was just thinking-" Arlo said slightly taken aback from Rei's laugh. Arlo felt his cheeks burn as he brushed a few strands of his blonde bangs to the side. Regardless, a curly, light strand still managed to fall into his eyes. Rei raised an eyebrow and spoke again, "I asked if you were worried about next year - 'ya know with becoming king and all?" Arlo squinted as he was actually quite surprised from Rei's query. "Me worried?" The blonde scoffed as he pointed to his own chest. "You must've forgot who you're talking to." His ego practically spoke for him. A laugh erupted from Rei. "You're right - what was I thinking," his tone got slightly worried at the end. His minty eyebrows furrowed.
He took another sip of his boba as his eyes shifted down to the table. Arlo winced, something about Rei's words had made him feel a little uneasy.
"Is there something wrong?"
Rei looked up at Arlo clutching his coffee cup. His words were laced with concern. Rei blinked and collected his thoughts before speaking. He smiled nervously and rubbed the back of his neck. "I guess I'm just worried," Rei hesitated. "Worried? About what?" Arlo puzzled.
"Well," Rei leaned back in the booth and glanced through the window for a second. Rei turned his attention back to his successor. Their eyes met and Rei opened his mouth to speak. "I don't think I'm worried about the future of Wellston, no no, Wellston and its students are in good hands with you," he expressed.
"I'm honestly more worried about you. I'm worried about how you're going to handle everything, there's a new wave of freshmen coming in and there's plenty of students I know that would love to take your position as king." His tone became more and more serious the longer he spoke. "Rei," Arlo responded. "I'll be fine. I was king back at my middle school - plus you've taught me practically everything I need to know. Therefore I should be perfectly fine." Arlo stated his case. "You see, Arlo, it just ain't that simple." Rei replied. "Many of your peers have also been royals in middle school, and some may surpass you in the coming years." Rei sipped his taro boba. "Just promise me this-" his demeanor became jokingly again. "Hmm?" Arlo mumbled.
"Just don't get dethroned too quickly,"
Arlo chuckled. "Oh, come on," he found it quite entertaining. "Now you're just underestimating my capabilities, Rei." Arlo added as he smirked. "So, don't worry," he stated. "I intend to keep this title for as long as I am here." A proud smile spread across Arlo's face as he spoke. Soon a smile a kin to Arlo's made its way to Rei's face.
"Hm..."
"That's what I like to hear,"
Arlo took a swig from his coffee cup, a wave of pride crashing off him. He felt empowered. Being king next year will surely be a breeze, the jack thought to himself and as he downed the last drops of his coffee. The black bitter fluid filled his stomach as warmth reached his innards - not because of his beverage but because of his predecessor's smile. He felt warmth inside and out now and a part of him knew why, while the other dismissed it completely. Arlo set his cup down on the table, he felt the sound reverberate in his core. "Welp," Rei started retrieving his wallet from his pocket. He placed some money on the check after examining the receipt. "Ready to go?" He asked Arlo.
The blonde waited for a moment to assemble his thoughts. His gaze quickly shifted from Rei to the window, his coffee cup, and then back to Rei.
"Yeah, let's get out of here,"
The pair stood from their booth to leave, letting themselves dive into another - more lighthearted - conversation. As they neared the exit of the establishment, Arlo took the time to appreciate the distance between them, how little it was. They felt so close yet too far away. Though in their current distance it seemed reasonable to grab his hand but he wouldn't dare to perform such a feat. He wouldn't have gotten very hard if he had tried. Only a few fingers would rise to grasp his but inevitably fail as his fingers realize just how big the gap between him and Rei's fingers were. He'd quickly give up then.
"Hey!"
Arlo was too engulfed in his thoughts to realize he had bumped into someone entering Woaba Boba. He looked to be around Arlo's age with his black hair slicked back with hair gel. "Watch where you're going." He sneered at Arlo his thick eyebrows scrunched together. Arlo frowned and opened his mouth to retaliate when Rei spoke for him. "Oh, we're sorry! He didn't see you there," Rei apologized for Arlo. He waved his hand with a nervous smile. The noirette squinted at Rei then looked away without saying anything. Rei then placed a hand on Arlo's shoulder. "Come on, let's go!" He said as he guided him out the door. Arlo felt warm with Rei's hand on his shoulder. He stopped himself, though. He decomposed himself and directed his mind to think about something other than his predecessor.
But he couldn't.
It was hard to rid your mind of a person who's impacted your life so dramatically - within only one year at that! It was hard to believe that the school year was ending. Because the end of the school year would mean the end of this. Hanging out with him. Talking to him. Walking around school with him. Just being around him. It was all going to be over so soon.
He still couldn't grasp it.
He didn't understand why this had to end so quickly. Why couldn't it have lasted longer? If he had known how Rei was going to be like beforehand, he would've made the most out of the short amount of time they had together. Maybe if he had known what he'd feel for him earlier...
No.
It's over.
Rei was to graduate in a month and Arlo was incapable of doing anything to prolong it. No matter how much he wished, tried, wanted, nothing was going to change that fact. Next year he was going to take Rei's place as king and Rei was to be released into the big scary world and make something of himself.
He was going to be alone.
Arlo dreaded for the end of the month, for though he was prepared to rule the school, he wasn't prepared to lose Rei.
