Alicante, Spain
A dead body on the pavement in front of a hotel attracts a lot of attention. Soon a crowd forms, like moths to a flame. Sets of eyes travel upwards, storey after storey, but all balconies are empty. Perhaps the man drank too much and fell. The holiday resort is always full of drunk Brits making fools of themselves.
Muttering, gasping, hissing. A mixture of Spanish and English voices bounce around the ever-expanding group. Someone brave checks for a pulse; much too optimistic when his brains are splattered around him, with limbs at strange, impossible angles. He shakes his head.
What happens now? Who is going to call the authorities? No one wants to take responsibility for a dead body. They want to get on with their holiday.
"That's my boyfriend!" screeches a hysterical woman who comes hurtling out of the hotel. Her face as white as her summer dress, and her eyes bulging.
The crowd parts and she falls to the floor beside the body. A collective sigh of relief emanates from the onlookers who realise they are no longer part of the tragedy, but simply observers.
The woman's screams continue.
