This story is written for Open Novella 2020. While this story is fanfic, the goal is to make the story something even those not familiar with the fandom I've chosen can follow.

Which prompt did I pick? What drew me to this particular one?

The prompt which inspired the story is number thirty-four, a fantasy/sci-fi prompt, "a radio signal is detected, its origins being somewhere in deep space from where no such things should feasibly originate, unless..." This particular story is an actual sequel to one of my Open Novella Works from last year, Wings of Home. In that regard, I've been making plans for a sequel ever since I finished the Wings of Home last year. However, I was having a bit of writer's block – I struggled in coming up with a solid beginning to my story. That was, until I saw the prompt, meaning what drew me to said prompt was the fact it gave me a solid launching off point which helped to solidify the future conflict within the story.

What is the story about?

What I am writing is fanfic – a crossover.

The first series I am writing for is Voltron: Legendary Defender, which is a space opera series featuring a flying robot comprised of five robot lions which combine together. Allura is the princess of the alien race called the Alteans while the enemy is the alien race called the Galra. VLD is actually the third animated incarnation for the franchise, the first being GoLions and the second Voltron: Defenders of the Universe, which took the Anime called GoLions and created a completely new script which in turn created an alternative universe.

The second series I am writing for is One Day at a Time (2017). This particular series is a reboot of an older series following a single mother of Hispanic descent. The reboot is a modern take on the original following a new family – Cuban - and tackling important issues, such as various topics which are relevant to the Hispanic community.

The story follows the characters as they deal with the Galra threat, not to mention how being paladins of Voltron upturn their lives. Earth is very much aware of Voltron's existence, meaning they're also dealing with the political fall out to some degree.

Who are the characters?

One of the headcanon I like working with for VLD is Shiro and Keith being biological siblings. In fact, VLD touches upon the fact the two are siblings, though there is no reference to them being biologically related. While the sibling relationship may only be Family of Choice, or as people in fandom call it, Found Family, the final sibling didn't actually nix the possibility of the two actually being half of full siblings. Even if it did, I'd still continue working with said headcanon due to the fact I fell in love with it from the very first season.

Part of this headcanon involves Ryo, a character I'd hoped VLD would have brought over from the original GoLions due to the fact Shiro's character – Takashi Shirogane – ended up being combined with his younger brother – Ryo Shirogane – into the character Sven for DotU (the original Voltron series). In fact, one of the reasons I fell in love with the headcanon of Shiro and Keith being siblings is because I wondered from the start of the series how they'd bring Ryo in and realized that – if Ryo were de-aged like the other characters from Voltron, he and Keith would look alike. Thus the idea of Ryo and Keith being twins came about.

Shiro is also LGBT, having had a relationship with a character named Adam in VLD and Romelle as Sven in DotU,. The original story started with Adam dying – the result of the prompt used for Wings of Home during last years Open Novella. Shiro also suffers from PTSD. Penelope, the single mother from One Day at a Time is also ex-military and suffers from PTSD, but her daughter Elena is also LGBT, her interest lying in the same sex only, but her partner is Syd, a non-binary.

One of the other prompts to inspire this story is prompt ten, a contemporary/general prompt, "the new kid is bullied relentlessly until they discover they actually have a quite unique and unexpected talent." Keith and Elena both dealt with bullying to some degree. Keith's stems from certain autistic traits which get in the way of him properly interacting with others socially, while Elena is a definite nerd, young feminine activist, but she's also gender non-conforming. However, the fact they're members of Voltron now doesn't make the bullying go away.

I was also inspired by prompt number fifteen, another contemporary/general prompt, "how can you prove whether at this moment we are sleeping, and all our thoughts are a dream' or whether we are awake, and talking to one another in the waking state?" Many of the characters are at a point of disbelief at their changing reality for a wide variety of reasons, including the fact up until now aliens were considered fictional.

I'm also inspired by prompt thirty-two, another fantasy/sci-fi prompt, though I do not know if it will be worked into this story, or a possible sequel. Said prompt is "ever since you were little, you've been able to see people's sorrow like a cloud hanging over their heads. Now it's coming in pretty handy in your job," which ties into the fact Allura does have telepathic abilities. How close I'd get to her seeing clouds would definitely depend on how the plot progressed, yet her telepathic abilities are definitely tied into the job of defending the universe from the Galra.
