I thought about telling mum what happened, but I decided against it. I didn't want to make an enemy on my first day here. My mirror was propped against the wall. Tom had told me that he hadn't wanted to put anything up in case I wanted them somewhere else.
I walked over to the mirror and examined my neck. There was a bright red mark where Daniel had held me. I don't think that the mark will disappear before dinner and there is no way that make up will cover it up.
I decide to wear a scarf. Yes, a scarf. It's totally not weird to wear a scarf when it's 38 degrees outside.I look at all the boxes lying in scattered piles around my room. There was no way that I was unpacking them now. I walk around trying to find the box with all my winter clothing in it. Eventually I found it in the far corner of my room.
I started pulling everything out.
"Why did I have to put the scarves at the bottom of the box?" I ask myself as I eventually grab a scarf.
Just as I finish wrapping it around my neck, mum yells, "Amy, dinner is ready!"
"Coming mum!" I yell back.
Before I leave, I look at myself in the mirror.
My shorts and tank top clashed horribly with my scarf, but that couldn't be helped.
I sigh and head downstairs."Amy, why are you wearing a scarf when it's 38 degrees outside?" Mum asked me as I walked in.
Everyone had turned to look at me.
"Um, I think I'm getting a cold." I lie.
"You poor thing!" Mum says.
I sit down and start eating dinner. It's spaghetti, my favourite.
About halfway through the meal, I feel Daniel's gaze on me. I look up and meet his eyes. Quickly, I look away. When everyone had finished eating, I asked to be excused and headed up to my room to start unpacking.
As I was ascending the stairs, Tom called up to me, "Don't forget that school starts tomorrow, Amy!"
I groan and walk into my room.
I'm going to go to the same school as Daniel. Brooklyn High School. Apparently, instead of uniforms, we can wear whatever we want. That will be a welcome change.
I decide to pick out an outfit for tomorrow. Since all my boxes are spread out all over my room, I decide to drag them all into the middle of my room.
"God. I didn't know how heavy my stuff was!" I pant as I drag the last box to the middle.Just as I was about to go through the boxes and find an outfit for tomorrow, there was a knock at my door.
I walk over and open it. Standing on the other side is Daniel.
"What do you want?" I ask him.
"Look," he says, "I just want to apologise for earlier. I didn't mean to do it, my temper just got the better of me. And it was cool of you not to tell Dad and your mum."
I was dumbfounded.
"Oh, it's ok. Thanks for apologising." I say.
I close the door and Daniel walks away.'That was weird.' I say to myself.
I go back to sorting through all of my boxes.
Eventually I finished unpacking everything.
I looked at the clock that I had just hung up. 10:00 pm.
'I should get some sleep.' I think to myself.A little while ago, Tom had come in and helped me set up my bed. He had offered to help me unpack the rest if my stuff but I had declined. I didn't exactly want his help. He was a nice guy and all, except there was just something a little odd about him and Daniel.
While we were setting up my bed together, Tom had told me that Daniel had been getting into all types of gangs, though he only had one close friend. Edmund.
He said that Daniel had been very moody and violent, and that if anything happens, come to him.
As if.
I don't trust him.
Ok, that sounded like I was judging him to quickly, it's just that since the day I met him and Daniel, I knew that something was off.
It was the way they both smiled. They didn't look forced or anything, well, except for Daniel's, they just looked like it hurt. Smiling, I mean.Anyway, getting back to what Tom was telling me about Daniel.
Apparently, Daniel had been a good kid when he was younger, but the death of his mother had really shaken him up.I decide to go to sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a long day.
I pull on my pyjamas and wriggle into bed. My eyes close and I drift off.Soon I was awoken by the sound of someone walking through the hallway loudly.
Then I heard whispering and laughing as the footsteps died away. I creep up to my window and look out.
Walking through the garden are Daniel, Edmund and some other boys.
'What are they up to?' I ask myself.
I smile as I tug on some jeans and a coat.
"There's only one way to find out." I say aloud as the door shuts behind me.
