Alone

"Brendt!" Tiffany exclaimed when she saw me walking my wat to their table.

I smiled at her before I turned to look at her father. I'm relieved that we're having lunch with his father. Hindi ko kasi mawari kung paano ko  pakikisamahan si Tiffany minsan. I can feel that she's expecting us to become something that we won't become.

"Buti naman at pinaunlakan mo ang pag-aaya ng anak ko," nagagalak na sabi ni Mr. Saavedra.

"Of course, Sir," nakangiting sabi ko nalang. "It's just a lunch. It's not too much to ask. Plus, I'm not busy to say no."

I sat beside Tiffany as I take a look at the meal, served at the table. Nakahinga naman ako ng maluwag nang makita kong walang putahe na may alimasag o alimango.

"Hope you like the foods served," sabi naman ni Tiffany sa'kin. "We already ordered while waiting for you para kakain ka nalang pagdating mo."

"I like it. Thank you," sabi ko nalang sa kaniya at saka ngumiti.

We started getting food for ourselves on our plate. I have no idea why Tiffany asked me out for lunch that maybe was an order from her father, but I still accepted her invitation.

"Uh, bakit niyo po ako gustong makausap?" tanong nang magsimula na kami sa pagkain.

Bahagya namang natigil si Mr. Saavedra sa pagkain at nag-angat ng tingin sa'kin. "I'm inviting you to my wedding," sabi niya.

My lips slightly parted. His wife died a few years ago, and now he's going to remarry.

"I hope it's okay with if I chose you as my best man. It's already written on the invitations which were rushed yesterday. We were able to get it earlier," medyo nahihiyang sabi nito.

Inilabas niya ang invitation at saka inilapag sa'king harapan. Hindi ko na muna ito binuksan at inilagay nalang sa bulsa ng aking suit.

"I have no problem with that, Sir," sabi ko naman. "Makakaasa po kayo na dadalo ako."

"Thank you so much, Brendt," pasasalamat ni Mr. Saavedra. "I know I can count on you."

Tiffany then talked about the upcoming wedding while we continue to eat our lunch. She told me that she takes part with the preparations.

"Dadating pala ang Mommy mo," biglang anunsyo ni Mr. Saavedra bago siya mag-angat ng tingin kay Tiffany.

Kumunot naman ang aking noo. Totoong nanay niya ba ang dadating o ito ang kaniyang magiging step mother na papakasalan ni Mr. Saavedra?

"Really?" nahimigan ko kaagad ang tuwa sa boses ni Tiffany.

I looked at my wrist watch and saw that it was already time to go. I still have a meeting with an investor in the next thirty minutes.

"Uhm... Excuse me, but I think I need to go now, Sir, Tiffany," I excused myself to the both of them. "I don't want to leave early, but I still have a meeting."

Bigla namang nawala ang ngiti sa mga labi ni Tiffany. "I actually want you to meet my Mom..."

Buti nalang napigilan ko ang pagtaas ng aking kilay. Why she wants me to meet her Mom is beyond me.

"Maybe, next time," sabi ko nalang at ngumiti.

"Why don't you go too, Tiff?" sabi naman ni Mr. Saavedra.
