TRIGGERS: getting shot at.
Lucas saw her again when he walked home from school with his skateboard under one arm. She had trailed him since he'd left the school library. Finally he sighed, stopping after five blocks. He found it slightly creepy. The click-clack of heels behind him stopped as well.
"You gonna come up here and tell me why you're tailing me, or you gonna follow me all the way to my uncle's ranch?" Lucas called, only slightly turning his head. When there was no sound or movement to answer him, he shrugged, and put his earphones in to start riding home. There was no way she'd be able to keep up with him on foot, and he was on a highway road; no cars, no horses.
Sure enough, he left her behind, not realizing he'd see her again very soon. In fact, about a mile in the open roads to your uncle's ranch, maybe 20 minutes away. He was blasting music and skating along, when he felt a bullet whiz by your ear.
Lucas cursed, and veered his skateboard into a ditch accidentally, startled. A gunshot sounded, which he could hear clearly now that the fall had ripped his earbuds out of his ears. The resulting bullet ripped into the ground beside him, and he scrambled away, letting out a little cry.
"C'mere, kitten." A voice hissed at him, and Lucas looked up to see the faint outline of the girl from earlier crouched behind a rock. Even as dark blue took over the land, signaling night, she still looked deathly beautiful. She beckoned him toward her fiercely, and he crawled towards her, having no other choice, slamming down against the rock beside her.
"What the hell's happening? Who are you? Why are people shooting at us?" Lucas asked her as a bullet ricoched off of where he'd been laying a second before.
"The asshole you beat up today? His daddy's out and lookin' for revenge on the kid who broke his son's nose." She didn't answer any of his other questions, not even looking at him, preferring to peer around the rock and take aim carefully at someplace he couldn't see. But she took so long in aiming, Lucas was afraid of her getting shot. She was something too beautiful to die, and he'd always had a hero streak in him.
So he did what was possibly the most stupid and badass thing he'd ever done. Lucas jumped out and yelled. "Lookat me ya dumb fuckers! Lookee here!" He hopped up and down and waved his arms. Hopefully it turned the shooter's attention off the woman beside him. To her, he hissed, "Take the goddamn shot!"
She did, and there was a cry of pain. But not before Lucas unleashed a scream of his own, hollering at the searing pain that ripped through his side.
The last thing that he saw before he blacked out was two worried eyes staring down at him, red as the devil's. They were oddly comforting, even though the owner of the orbs had followed him, and had just killed or seriously injured someone who was trying to shoot them both.
