Amira Love Johnson

Amira nervously bit her finger nails as she sat in the hospital's waiting area. Biting her nails was a horrible habit she picked up as a child that carried over into adulthood after being diagnosed with anxiety.

Her hands began to shake as sweat slid down the sides of her face signaling an anxiety attack waiting to happen. Since these episodes were so common, especially during hard times like this, Amira jumped out of her seat and ran to the nearest restroom.

After frantically running down the dimly lit hallways and causing a few strangers to stare in confusion Amira found a door labeled 'Women'. Once inside Amira locked the door and immediately started her quest for what she desperately needed.

Popping the two small pills into her mouth Amira let out a sigh of relief. Taking Xanax was once a daily thing for Amira, using it to distract her from the many things that caused anxiety attacks. As of now, her slight addiction had subsided becoming more of a last resort than an only option.

"Get it together bitch," Amira finally spoke out loud deciding it was time for a pep talk.

Walking out of the restroom and back towards the waiting area Amira decided she had been waiting long enough. She approached the front desk trying to think of the right words to say.

"Is there anything I could help you with ma'am?" The receptionist asked after noticing the nervous expression on Amira's face.

"I- I'm waiting for an update on my brother. J- Joseph Moore." Amira breathlessly said.

The older white lady, who wore a name tag labeled as Whitney gave Amira a faint smile before saying, "It says he's still in surgery ma'am. Updates will be given once surgery is over. It shouldn't be much longer don't worry."

Amira gave a slight nod before quietly thanking the older lady. Sitting back down in her original seat Amira began to look through her photo gallery searching for her favorite image of her closest friend turned brother Joseph.

Once she found it tears pooled at the brim of her eyelids. Joseph was the sweetest person she'd ever had the pleasure of knowing. She silently prayed that his life wouldn't end tonight.
