Demetrius Alexander Jones

Three weeks later.

Demetrius walked around the familiar hallways of the hospital making his way towards the elevators that led to the food court. Over the past three weeks he spent a majority of his time at Mercy Hospital. Sitting beside an unconscious Joseph and his family waiting for any sign of improvement from the injured male.

Upon hearing the elevator ding, Demetrius began to walk a little faster than normal hoping to make it inside before the doors closed. His quickened pace caused him to bump into someone almost knocking their beverage over.

"I'm so sorry, let me help you with this." Demetrius apologized, not caring about the elevator closing anymore.

"It's okay," The young woman he'd bumped into tried her best to hold in her laughs as she watched Demetrius frantically pick up the fallen napkins.

Recognizing the angelic voice Demetrius stood up smirking, "Oh it's you, hello Amira." After introducing himself the day of the accident, Demetrius was instantly welcomed by Joseph's family. They thanked him countless times, promising to eventually repay him even after he assured them he didn't need anything.

Amira had become his favorite Jones' family member. He found her very attractive and took every opportunity he could to analyze her features. Though they rarely exchanged words while the rest of her family was around, the two always stayed in Joseph's room the longest after visiting hours were over deciding they enjoyed each other's company in the hospital's dull environment even though they refused to admit it out loud.

Their slight friendship began after a staring contest. The silly game eventually became a serious competition between them, trying to see who could keep their eyes open the longest.

"You know if you took a picture it would definitely last a lot longer," Amira stated with an amused expression on her face.

"I would but I just recently ran out of storage on my phone," Demetrius joked. He was slightly embarrassed but would never let the beautiful girl across the room become aware of that.

"Well I'd appreciate it if you stopped being a creep," Amira laughed as she turned towards Demetrius placing her hands under her chin.

"My apologies Ms. Jones," Demetrius smiled at Amira silently praying that she'd continue talking to him. It had been five days since they met and she hadn't spoken a word to him after that first night.

Amira sighed, taking a quick glance over at her brother wishing he would finally wake up, "When we were younger Joey would always have staring contest with me. He always won and it made me so mad, I'd stand in the bathroom mirror and hold my eyelids open for as long as I could trying to beat his stupid record." She let out a small laugh before wiping away a few tears.

"I bet you can't beat me," Demetrius said trying to cheer her up.

Amira quickly sat up enjoying the idea of a challenge, "I bet I can."

"Hello, Earth to Demetrius," Amira snapped her fingers in front of his face as he stared off into space.

Blinking quickly Demetrius chuckled as he began to pay attention, "My bad I don't know where my head be at these days."

Amira smiled at him, finding his nervous behavior adorable, "Well as I was saying, I brought tacos for everyone. I know you were on your way to that God awful food court so let's go."

Demetrius chuckled as he turned around and followed Amira towards Joey's room. Jeannie and Jay were both asleep so Amira decided to keep a few tacos in the to-go container for them when they got up from their nap.

Sitting down beside Joseph, Demetrius began to eat his taco. Hearing someone clear their throat he looked up and smiled at the sight, "Yes?"

Amira laughed, pushing him over and getting comfortable on the small couch. After finishing her taco Amira threw away her trash and sat back down next to Demetrius.

She began to feel a wave of sadness overcome her. Stopping herself from biting her nails Amira sighed, "Why do you continue to check on him?"

Demetrius looked over at her, noticing the sad look on her face he grabbed her hand hoping to ease the pain. "I want to be here when he wakes up. I doubt he'll even remember what happened but I know I'll never forget and because of that I have to be here when he wakes up," Demetrius rubbed Amira's hand as he spoke.

She let out a shaky breath, as if she was about to cry. Quickly fanning her eyes she looked at her brother's seemingly lifeless body before speaking, "Tell me what happened."
