Amira Love Johnson

Hours had passed since Amira had been told the surgery wouldn't last much longer. Her patience was running thin and the Xanax was wearing off. Amira noticed the receptionist named Whitney leaving the waiting area. Rolling her eyes at the older lady, Amira decided to calm her nerves by calling her mother Jeannie.

After the third ring Amira heard her mother's voice, "Hi sweet pea." The familiar childhood nickname caused Amira to smile before replying, "Hi mommy." The two exchanged words, mostly Jeannie giving details on how her day at work went. The fairly young mother spent her days in an office managing their family business, a chain of barbecue restaurants named after her husband Jay.

Almost forgetting the reason why she called her mother Amira quickly blurted the words that had been previously floating in her head, "Joey's in surgery and I'm not sure if he'll make it out alive." The line went silent for what seemed like an eternity before Jeannie responded, "Send me your location now Love." The sound of the call ending caused Amira to frown as she obeyed her mother's wishes.

Amira noticed a nurse holding a clipboard walk through the waiting area's double doors. "Family of Joseph Moore," she semi-yelled. Amira instantly got up from her seat and walked towards the nurse seeing the man a few seats away from her sit up in his chair as if he also wanted to hear what was about to be said. Deciding to ignore the man's odd behavior she turned her attention to the nurse named Annie.

"He's out of surgery, still pretty out of it but you're more than welcome to enter his room," Annie stated with a small smile. Amira nodded her head and followed the young woman to her best-friend's designated room.

Upon entering Amira began to cry, wiping away the tears before they could reach her chin. "Oh Joey," she sobbed. The person she laid her eyes on looked nothing like her best-friend. His eyes were swollen shut, scratches and bruises covered his face and neck while his leg was propped up on the bed wrapped in a cast. Earlier that day he had been involved in a major car accident, barely escaping his car before someone pulled him out as it exploded. Amira had no idea who saved her best-friend but she knew whenever they were revealed she would find a way to repay them.

The sound of heels clicking on the hallway floor could be heard from inside the hospital room and Amira knew her mother was close by. Her theory had been proven correct as a red-faced Jeannie entered the room speaking inaudible words to her daughter. They embraced each other in a hug before pulling away, Amira deciding that she should give her mother the gory details of Joey's accident.

Amira's parents Jeannie and Jay Johnson adopted Joey eight years ago after his biological family disowned him because of his sexual preferences. They didn't understand how he could subject himself to so much hatred from the outside world, he was already black and poor why would he choose to be gay as well? When Amira brought the unfortunate situation to her family's attention they embraced Joey as if he were their own no questions asked. Especially Jeannie, who knew first hand what it felt like to be shunned by relatives, becoming a fourteen year old mother in a strict Vietnamese household caused her to grow up on her own early in life.

"Why didn't any doctors call us? I'm so confused. My child, my poor Joey." Jeannie continued to ramble on while Amira sat beside her staring at Joey's almost lifeless body praying that he woke up soon and had an easy recovery. Jay soon walked in along with his oldest daughter Ryan, the four of them exchanged hugs before holding hands and praying for Joseph.

A knock on the door caused them all the look away from Joey and at the clearly nervous stranger. Amira being the last to look towards the man noticed he was the same person she had seen in the waiting area, a confused expression took over her face before she asked him to properly identify himself.

The man took a step into the room before speaking, "I'm Demetrius, I pulled J- Joseph out of his car this morning."
