Just beyond the black stump, an adventurer emerged from her front door.

She scrambled down the beaten road with a fire of determination in her eyes as she located her prey, pounced, and... landed headfirst into the dirt. Equally vexed and perplexed at the butterfly's reaction speed, she got up, brushed the dust off her robin egg pinafore dress, straightened her golden ringlets, and gathered the courage to run again.

"Camila!" her mother called from the kitchen window, clearly exasperated at her for ruining her freshly washed clothes, "it's lunchtime!"

"Five more minutes, Mom!" she screamed back, a coy smile playing on her lips as she careered the other way. She had a feeling that she just might not be back in time for lunch.

A little ways down, two small figures collided in a cloud of cackles. The boy was the first to untangle himself; he stood on the balls of his worn out velcro kicks and hurried to help the girl up. They did their secret handshake (slap, slap, dap, jazz fingers), and, checking that the coast was clear of any suspecting adults, set off into the woods.

"Where to today, Cami?" the boy inquired.

Camila winced, "You know I hate it when you call me that, Wayne."

"That's what makes it fun," Wayne said, flashing his cheeky signature smirk that always reminded Camila of the cheshire cat, "I was thinking the lake."

"The lake?" she shuddered and clutched her heart in mock hurt, subtly trying to guilt trip him into not going to the place she feared most, but upon glimpsing Wayne's huge brown puppy eyes, sighed, "Fine. The world is your oyster, Captain."

The sky was as blue as the Windex cleaner at home when they got to their blaze, the river. Along the riverbanks, Camila suddenly stopped. She stared into the dark, enigmatic waters and trembled, remembering her childhood dreams of falling in... and never coming back out.

Wayne, with his iconic 169 points of emotional quotient, noticed. He quickly shook her out of it.

"Hey," he soothed as he took her hand, "don't be scared. Do you trust me?"

She scowled, "Yes, but I don't trust the water."

He smirked at her again, letting go of her hand, "Follow me, Cami!"

Rolling her eyes, Camila suppressed a smile, "Alright. Lead the way."
