She would have never believed that a tree could bring so much happiness, but the way Blue oohed and aahed at it, she might as well have bought a Tiffany bracelet.

She'd gone big, sneering at the smaller trees to get the tallest one she could comfortably fit in her house. If she was doing it, might as well do it properly.

"I brought decorations, too," she said, pointing to a box.

She hadn't wanted to waste too much time away from Onika, who occasionally woke up long enough for her to coax some slightly burned, Cup O' Noodles into her mouth, so she'd asked a sales clerk to grab everything she needed and then she checked it before paying the bill.

Blue's delight made it obvious the woman had gotten the right things.

They were working on the tree-her decorating the top while Blue was in charge of the bottom. She heard footsteps and turned to find Onika walking in, seeming dumbfounded.

You'd think after four days she would gotten used to seeing her, but she just knocked the air out of her lungs. There was a bit of color to her cheeks, and while her nose was a little red, she was just plain gorgeous, despite her disheveled state.

"Mommy!" Blue screamed, jumping to her.

She caught her midair and pulled her up to hold her tight, burying her head in her throat. After a minute, she dropped the child back down.

"Sorry, Blue, I'm a little weak right now. And you're heavy."

"Well, you smell," Blue replied, shrugging.

"Is that a boogie on your face?"

"You're all sticky and yucky. And your hair is so bad you might have to shave it."

They both started to giggle, and Onika wiped her watery eyes, before looking up to her, and then to her tree.

"This is... Christmassy."

"No comment," she replied, somewhat embarrassed.

She bit back a smile, guessing right, "Blue's a little hard to resist."

The girl certainly was.

"So... let me know if I've got this right. You came to see me and I was out of it, so you ended up taking care of us."

She nodded, more and more uncomfortable as the seconds stretched.

"Thank you. We... I don't know what we would have done if..."
