A week had passed since my mom underwent her first of many surgeries. And I'd say so far so good. She looked better than before, a bit of colour restored to her face.
"Hey mom, how you feeling?" She was sitting in bed,a pillow behind a back for support while watching one of those cooking shows.
"Hey honey, I'm hanging on here, did you sneak in the chicken wings for me?", she asked, her eyes darting around searching if I brought it.
"Mom", I scolded, " you know I'm not supposed to do that. Doctor's orders, for a week and a half."
"Ah well, so much for trying, I thought since you were my daughter and all, you'll be blinded by your love for me but you can clearly see better than daylight."
I sigh and turn to my mother, who had her face to the wall, trying to guilt trap me, " you can't blackmail me Mrs. Evan's, it's not gonna work."
"Aahh, I see you're at it again Clara"
I jumped at the intrusion of the all to familiar voice.Dr. Reynolds
"Hi Ms. Evans, didn't see you there, thought she was harassing one of the nurses again", he clarifies.
Again!I squint my eyes at the culprit, which happens to be my mom, and give her the 'are you kidding me' look.
"Hello Dr. Reynolds", I respond to his earlier greeting and add, "I'm so sorry if she's being too much. She's us-
I'm rudely cut off by a clearing throat, "if you're going to discuss me in my presence, might as well give me actual food. You know just saying", mom interrupts.
Dr. Reynolds laughs his beautiful laugh, while my face flushes in embarrassment. This woman.
"Can I speak to you outside for a minute", I ask him.
"Sure". We move outside to the corridors, which has a totally different atmosphere than the rooms. The low buzz of doctors and nurses as they move about trying to save lives. The occasional shouts of patients or their families. This has me all creeped out, I hate hospitals.
A tug on my arm brings me back to reality. I'm being drugged through the crowd of people.
"Where are we going", I query.
"My, office, its too noisy out here", he replies.
Oh, makes sense. His office overlooked the hospital garden. I could spend days watching the people and the flowers. It wasn't so big and not small either, it was the perfect space for someone like him.
Wish I had an office like this. I sigh dreamily."Well thank you" his voice echoes across the room.
I look at him with arched eyebrows, and watch as he strides confidently to his seat."You obviously like my office, been watching you admire it for a minute straight", he arrogantly explains.
"And here I thought you were cured", I mumble under my breath, while hesitantly taking the seat facing his desk.
"I beg your pardon Ms. Evans"
He had rolled his sleeves up to his elbows and undone the first two buttons of his shirt, his white coat draped on the couch across the room.
Why do the hot ones always end up being the stupid ones, I internally groan.I plastered a sickly sweet smile and said, " I was just wandering about my mother, after all that's what I wanted to talk to you about."
He rubbed his chin suspiciously with his index finger and thumb looking at me with a strange eye. "Mmh, if that's the case."
"Your mother seems to be doing well, first surgery went okay, we were able to fix any damage done by the microbes, but succeeding procedures is what will give us the final result. Don't worry she's in good hands, Ms. Evans.""Thank you once again Dr. Reynolds, I don't know how I can ever repay you", I pick up my bag and proceed to leave his office, " Id love to stop by and see her, but I'm getting late for an interview. Tell her I'll come by tomorrow please."
"Would do."
"Ms. Evans", I turn around in response to his call, " I've got tickets to a premiere club opening, mind joining me?"My brain can't seem to function, and my lips keep opening and closing. I probably look like a starved salmon, but who cares, did he just ask me out!!
"It's ok if you don't want to go, you seemed tensed and stressed, and I just wanted to help you release it. I know what you're going through is tough, and I thought maybe this might help you forget a bit you know", his long fingers raked through his dark brown hair as he spoke.
Was he nervous? This is a bad idea Asia, you can't go out with the doctor seeing to your mom's case, that's so wrong. Oh but how I need a night out. I turn around and face him, psyching myself to reject his invite, and this is what comes out,
"Uhh..I-I sure, I'd go"
I quickly run out of his office and sink against the door, what did I just do.
