"You have to do something now! I got you proof that Empress Pernille was planning this years in advance but you won't do ANYTHING!"
Councillor Emery sighed. "Sophie, we appreciate the trouble you went to to retrieve this information, but any offensive action we take against the trolls will result in a full on war. Yes, the trolls may have broken the alliance and tried to start a war themselves. However, a war would be irrational when there is nothing to fight about. If we ignore this one event, we can avoid something that would destroy the whole world."
Sophie stared at the councillor in disbelief. "They destroyed Foxfire, one of the elves most important places, killed hundreds of elves, and you want to let them go?!"
"Sophie," Councillor Oralie broke in. "Please control your anger. We know it may seem like a bad decision, but all the councillors have agreed it's the best course of action. The new troll leader is willing to work with us."
"Oh. And they're totally not going to go against the wishes of their former leader and destroy us again." Sophie scoffed.
"Which, if you hadn't broken the Empress's mind, would not have happened as we know her ways! If you repair her mind, we might be able to avoid a tragedy!"
"That's all you've been saying the whole day! Avoid a tragedy. Avoid destruction. Avoid lives being taken. Well let me tell you something in case you've forgotten. Many lives have already been taken! Many elves have been hurt! Even if we can stop this, you can't ignore what has already happened. What happened to the councillors I thought I knew?"
"What happened to the Sophie we thought we knew?" Asked Councillor Oralie. "You used to be so happy and willing to help however you could. But now...you're so angry and resentful."
"You know what probably happened to me? My friends got hurt. You said I was willing to help however I could? Choosing to take revenge on the trolls would keep elves from going rogue and fighting the trolls by themselves."
"Last time I checked, you weren't a councillor. And we didn't call you here to discuss what we should do. We brought you here to discuss your punishment." Councillor Emery said.
Sophie's face went blank. "My-punishment? For what?! And don't pretend I don't know you're trying to change the subject!"
"Your punishment for breaking Empress Pernille's mind. You knew you weren't allowed to, yet you still did it. Why?"
"To help the elven world!!! How do you not understand what I'm saying! I broke the rules to retrieve information that would save us!"
"You could have brought her back for legal interrogation and you wouldn't have gotten in trouble. There was another reason you did it."
Sophie tried to hide her sniffling. "There was no other reason."
"Now you're trying to keep information from me. WHY DID YOU DO IT?" Councillor Emery thundered.
Shuddering at the councillor's ferocity, Sophie sullenly replied "She hurt my friends. I can't forgive that."
"That is no reason to break rules so severe you'll get banished for them!"
Sophie looked up, wiping her eyes. "Banished?
Councillor Emery sighed sadly, as if about to deliver upsetting news. (It did turn out to be upsetting as readers likely know.) "The other councillors and I have talked this over for many hours and we came to a unanimous decision. We decided to include Mr. Vacker for his involvement in this incident."
"W-what?" Sophie stuttered. Fitz looked up from his seat where he hadn't talked the whole time.
"Sophie Elizabeth Foster and Fitzroy Avery Vacker. You have hereby been banished from The Lost Cities."
Author's Note
Welp, there's another chapter. I did it in a day and it wasn't very good cause I basically had the characters ramble on and I had to finish it before dinner but oh well it's fine. This chapter is fine.
Thanks for reading this chapter. I will hopefully have another chapter out by the end of the month. Author-chan out.
