"Yo, Luke!" Jonathan called to his older brother. "Check it out! There's a new kid in town!"
The 16-year-old rolled his eyes, but walked to go and see what his younger brother was talking about. Peering out the window, Luke could see a moving van parked by the curb. Three people were running in and out of the house, carrying boxes and bags.
"Huh, guess there's a new family," Luke said.
"Yeah, sure, it's a new family," Jonathan Patterson groaned. "But look! There's a kid down there!"
Luke looked a little harder and noticed one of the figures was smaller than the other two.
"What's going on in here, boys?" A new voice said.
Jon and Luke turned around to see their mother standing in the doorway.
"There's a new family, ma," Luke said.
"And there's a kid, too!" Jon exclaimed, running over to his mother.
Jon hugged his mom as tight as possible. Mrs. Patterson chuckled and hugged her son.
"I'll bake some cookies you boys can take over," Mrs. Patterson said. "And hey, take Ryan."
"Mom, Ryan doesn't leave his room," Luke sighed.
Mrs. Patterson sighed. "He's having a hard time, boys. You need to get him out of the house. He loves spending time with his cousins!"
"At least... he used to," Jon signed.
The three frowned.
"Well, I'm gonna go start on the cookies," Mrs. Patterson finally said. "You two get dressed and convince your cousin to go with you, okay?"
The boys nodded and both went to their dressers to get their clothes. Their mother left their room and walked to the guest room. She knocked on the door.
"Hey, Ryan, it's Auntie Gail," Mrs. Patterson said softly to her nephew. "The boys are gonna go see the new neighbors! I want you to go with them, okay? They're just gonna give them some cookies, that's all."
There was no answer on the other side of the door.
"Honey?" Mrs. Patterson said.
Inside the room, sitting on his bed, was Ryan Turek. He had his headphones on with the volume up all the way. If you were in the room with him, you could hear "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi through his headphones.
Mrs. Patterson knocked on her nephew's door again. Ryan still didn't hear.
"Jon!" Mrs. Patterson called.
Jon ran around the corner to his mom's side.
"Go get your cousin, okay?" Mrs. Patterson said. "I'm going to start baking."
Jon nodded and waited until his mother was gone. Then, he slowly entered Ryan's room. His cousin had that same melancholy look on his face as he stared at a picture on his phone.
"Ry?" Jon asked quietly.
[Time to flip a coin! Tails: His parents are divorcing and he's staying with them while it happens. Heads: They're fucking dead.]
The twelve-year-old walked to his cousin's side. Jon peered over Ryan's shoulder to see his aunt and uncle, the Tureks', when they were both alive and happy.
