Jon had a hard time at school. His grades dropped and so did his spirits the day that Evan disappeared.

Evan hadn't been living on Elm Street for a year, yet, and Jon still considered the boy his best friend. Everybody knew that Evan had been the friend Jon needed in his life. And Evan's parents knew that Jon had been just the friend that Evan had needed, as well.

Luke tried to make his little brother happy all the time, but nothing seemed to cut it for the younger boy. No matter how many treats that the other Pattersons made or how many things the other kids tried to do, Jon couldn't seem to smile.

Joe Robinson's uncle, Scott Robinson, was the police chief of Dead Man's Crossing. Jon was over at the Robinsons' every day when Scott was home to ask if they had anything on Evan's disappearance. Every day, Scott sighed and shook his head.

"Jon, we're real sorry," Scott said, sitting down on the couch. "I know Evan was your best friend but... we just don't have any leads. We're looking real hard, Kiddo. And we're looking everywhere."

"You're not looking hard enough!" Jon exclaimed, wiping the tears in his eyes away.

Jon hated crying. A few of his friends teased him when he cried and he never got over it. Jon wanted to seem older than he was to the other kids, so he tried not to act like a baby, and babies cried.

Jon stormed out of Joe's house and ran back to his own. On the way there, he stumbled and fell onto the sidewalk.

"Hey, watch it, Kid!" A voice shouted.

Jon froze and looked up. There was Mr. Wilson, glaring at Jon with pure hatred in his eyes.

"Learn how to walk," Mr. Wilson scolded, and then walked off muttering obscenities under his breath. "Fuckin' kids always in the way."

Jon looked up in fear as Mr. Wilson walked away. Suddenly, he was being carried off in somebody's arms. Jon looked up and saw Anthony holding him. He tucked into Anthony's chest as the older boy carried him away.

Anthony set Jon down on Jon's bed. Jon looked up through tear-filled eyes as Brock ran up to him with a first-aid kid. Brock kneeled down and dabbed at the scrape on Jon's knee with hydrogen peroxide. Jon hissed as it stung his leg.

"I know it hurts, Bud, give me a minute," Brock said calmly.

Brock then put some Neosporin on a bandage and put it on Jon's knee.

Ryan knocked on the doorframe of Jon and Luke's room. "Hey, can I come in?"

"Door's open, Ryan," Luke said to his cousin.

Ryan walked in and sat down next to Jon on the bed. Jon hugged Ryan really tight. Ryan wrapped his arms around Jon.

"Joe heard what happened and told us," Brock said. "Chief Robinson and the other officers are trying their best to find him, Bud."

"I know," Jon sighed, and he looked glum for a second.

Then, Jon thought about his interaction with Mr. Wilson. He shot up and stumbled over to the window. He looked over at Mr. Wilson's house.

"I think I know where he went..." Jon whispered.

"Wait, really?" Luke asked. "Where, Jon?"

"There," Jon said, pointing at Mr. Wilson's house.

"No, he can't be there," Ryan reminded Jon. "Mr. Wilson was already interviewed. He hadn't seen him."

"The police didn't investigate enough!" Jon exclaimed. "He was talking about kids always being in the way!"
