"Remind me again why I'm helping you," I whispered to Josh from behind the bushes.
"Shush, Aldo, someone might hear us," he looked to see if anyone was inside the house we were going to kinda break into.
Josh was an idiot but I had never imagined he'd be such a big idiot. He and his ex-girlfriend were working together on a project. Then they broke up and refused to see each other's faces again. Turned out, that girl, Melanie, was only dating Josh for that project. She deleted all the documents related to it from Josh's laptop before the break-up and the only documents were on her laptop now. She was going to submit the project as her original work when in reality, it is exactly the opposite.
"So here's the plan; I know for certain that Melanie isn't at home today. Her room is most probably unoccupied. We'll climb up that tree and jump in through her window. I'll delete the documents from her laptop after copying them to my USB. We'll jump out and reach home safe and sound." He breathed sharply. "Any questions?"
"How can you be so sure that she isn't home and her laptop is in the room?"
"You don't take your laptop to family dinners, do you? Now, let's go," he waved his hand in dismissal. "No more questions."
We jumped over the fence and got inside. Josh knew the way to the backyard, and I climbed the tree first. Fortunately, my brother and I had climbed enough trees in our childhood that we had probably become an expert at it now.
"You better know what you're making me do and do not, I repeat, do not forget your promise." I whisper-shout at him.
"Stop being dramatic," he sounded calm in this baneful situation.
"Josh," I climbed up the branches with his help. "I don't want to rot in prison at such an early age. I hope she doesn't call the police and refuse to recognize you."
"Just climb already," was all he replied as he pushed my butt up that old leafless tree. I wondered if that tree was even alive.
Once I reached up to the height of the already open window, carefully I peeked inside to check if anyone was there. But Josh was right. Nobody was probably at home. I jumped in through the window and touched the walls in search of the switchboard to turn on the lights. I was already feeling like a thief.
"Holy marmalade!" my eyes hurt like hell when I turned the lights on. The yellow walls were so bright that I may have gone blind.
"What's wrong?" Josh jumped inside in haste, nearly knocking over the lamp on the bedside table.
"Who in the world paints their bedroom walls yellow?" I grunted.
"What?" he looked displeased. "I'll ask Melanie when I meet her, Aldo," he responded, "now, shall we do what we're here for?"
"Yeah," I rolled my eyes and stood beside the window to keep an eye out of the house if someone was coming. Josh grabbed the laptop lying on the bed and turned it on. I didn't question why he knew the password.
I looked around the yellow room and my eyes fell on the photo frames hanging beside her desk. "Holy riceballs!"
There were photographs on the shelf behind. They were Melanie and Marina. There was another one with two boys. A younger and an older. They all looked so alike. Same black hair, round bulging eyes, pouted lips. But I must admit, Marina was much buxom.
"Stop scaring the shit out of, Aldora," Josh jumped from the bed. "Now what?"
"Your ex-girlfriend is Marina's elder sister. Look at all these pictures." I pointed.
"Marina, your friend, that you often complained about?" Josh pondered, looking at the frames along with me.
"We used to be friends," I murmured. "But not anymore."
