As you glanced around your empty office, you just could not believe that so many skilled Enforcers and Inspectors, people that you had held dear to your heart, had just disappeared into thin air. Now, you were the only Inspector in Unit One; you didn't even have an Enforcer to call your own. The higher-ups were telling you nothing, which made you feel uneasy. The air in the room was thick despite its emptiness. Thinking back upon your years of faithful service to the Sybil system as an Inspector, you couldn't think of any case stranger than this. What was even stranger, was that it seemed as if no one was doing anything...
"Snap out of it (Reader).", you thought to yourself. There was no use beating yourself up over something that was totally out of your control. It would be handled... They would come back... Instead, you tried to concentrate completely upon the report you were typing up. Recently, you had been involved in a rather gruesome murder case. A man, who had been having an affair with his secretary, had had his heartbroken by said woman. He obviously had not taken the break up well. Honestly, it was amazing that he was able to keep his Psycho Pass at an okay level as he calmly strode to her home. His readings were competely normal as he hid himself near her door, as he jumped from the shadows and grabbed her tiny frame. He had killed her, chopped her body into tiny pieces, and slowly ate her piece by piece. The only reason he had been caught was because her neighbor had filed a compliant. You could still remember opening the door to the small apartment, the rancid smell of blood, and your Dominator pointing directly at the man as he calmly sat at the dinner table, cutting another delicate piece of raw meat and placing it on his tongue.
The clicking of your keyboard stopped as a large knock radiated from the door. It was so loud, you couldn't help the small jump that escaped from your body. The door slowly opened, as a veteran Inspector appeared in the door. You stared at him, wondering what would bring him here. It seemed as if everyone avoided anything to do with Unit One like the plague. No one wanted to end up like them. "(Reader)! Sorry to barge in without warning, however, I have someone here for you." It was then that you noticed there was a man directly behind him. His hair was black and messy, his eyes piercing. As he stared at you, it seemed as if he were trying to read you. It made you feel... uncomfortable. Not a very good first impression. But, why would someone be here for you? Standing from your chair, you walked over to greet the two men. "It's perfectly fine, Mr. Yamamoto. As you can see, I don't get many visitors." You tried to offer both men a smile, yet the newcomer still had that same blank expression upon his face.
"I suppose I'll introduce you two!", Mr. Yamamoto excitedly exclaimed. You were so thankful for his presence at this moment. He had always seemed too... kind for this sort of work. He was definitely that bit of fresh air that everyone needed from time to time. "This is Shinya Kougami. He is going to be your new partner."
"New... partner?" You hadn't meant to sound so confused and offended, but that was the way your voice came through. For some reason, the sound of those two words together sent your stomach churning. New... partner. New. Partner. Your hands clenched into fists so tight, you could almost feel your nails breaking into your soft skin. Why? Why did those words make you so angry? Instantly, you knew that answer. They had given up looking for all of your comrades. They were all abandoned by the system, perhaps presumed dead. Your dear friends were gone. You clicked your tongue. "Couldn't even give them a proper funeral before replacing them eh?", you thought to yourself. But then, a deep, smooth voice filled your ears, removing you from your thoughts. "That's not gonna be a problem is it, Inspector (Reader)?" Blinking your (e/c) eyes, you stared into his dark grey ones. His voice dripped with sarcasm, yet it had sounded so straight forward and blank. Who knew that you could dislike a person so quickly. Taking a deep breath, you relaxed your hands. Attempting to put on your sweetest voice, you walked back towards your desk, taking a seat. "No. Of course not. Make yourself at home, Mr. Kougami." Mr. Yamamoto could feel the tension in the air. Laughing sheepishly, he took a few steps backwards. "Well, I wish you two the best of luck especially since I already have your first case!" You internally groaned. The report for the case you had just finished wasn't even done yet and now there was more work to be piled on top of that.
He quickly briefed you. The case didn't seem to be that intensive. You and Kougami were to investigate a string of grand theft auto cases, though what was strange about this case, was the fact that they were all government armored cars... that was all the information that was given. Whatever the contents of the vehicles were, they apparently did not want you to know. It didn't seem... right. Then again, what did seem right these days? Mr. Yamamoto left, and once again, an eerie silence fell over the room. Glancing over to Kougami, you watched as he pulled out a cigarette carton. "Could you not smoke in here?" He placed the cigarette between his lips and flicked his lighter completely ignoring you. Gritting your teeth, you turned your chair so that you were completely facing him. "Seriously are you always th-"
"What do you think happened to them?", Kougami interrupted you, those calculating eyes staring into space. Your mouth was slightly open, frozen in the middle of your sentence. Blinking a few times, you tried to absorb what Kougami had just said. Them? Was he referring to... Turning back towards your computer, you looked down at your keyboard. What did you think? You didn't want to say anything. Saying something out loud would make your answer seem concrete. Yet... hoping would make it hurt even more if you had turned out to be wrong. Kougami glanced over to you, when he had not recieved an answer. He stared at your back, observing the way that your head hung low, your shiny, (h/c) hair covering your face. His eyes lingered longer upon your frame than they should have, and he noticed that. Breathing out a steady stream of smoke, he put out his cigarette in a clean ashtray and stood.
"We better get on that case..." You continued to stare at your keyboard for a few moments longer, silently cursing yourself. Why didn't you have an answer? You cared about them didn't you? Why didn't you have the courage to ask the same questions that this man asked? Kougami didn't even know them. Sighing heavily, you stood as well. Now wasn't the time to get trapped within your feelings. "Right. Let's go."
