This is somewhat of a timeline for Bob, Rick, and Nora's travels and how they got to the current point in the book. It's written in an outline of some sorts in case I ever decide to turn this into an actual book instead of flashbacks or backstory.

Rick and Bob are from our dimension, so they are both aware of our history/timeline. Somehow, they accidentally end up in Nora's dimension (that's the one with the assassins/steampunk system/style/culture). Explanation for how that happened: The first major portal Rick created was unstable and ended up pulling him and his brother into Nora's dimension. He probably prepared for the chance that would happened and packed some stuff (like his databases and other things he's been messing with).

They stay in Nora's dimension for a while and become assassins. They also meet Nora's family.

So, something happens that causes Rick, Bob, and Nora to flee from Nora's dimension. Something probably tipped them off that someone or something was after them causing them to once more attempt to travel via portal.

Someone from Nora's dimension can detect the use of the smaller portals Rick had begun working on. That person or group is what is after the trio and why Nora's family follows.

The gang got separated due to a battery shortage on the portal reg prototype (the portal reg is what keeps portal travel safe in the main story). Rick and Nora went through before the portal collapsed. Bob was able to open a new portal, but travels back in time and to the dimension that became Mike's dimension. (Maybe the battery shortage was due to when they were alerted that they were being targeted?)

Luckily Rick had the force sight to either take or destroy his research leaving none of it in the hands of those after them.

Whoever is after Bob, Rick, and Nora is a villain. They might still be after them or have been taken care of.

While Rick and Nora are chilling on a beach at a resort dimension with parties and resorts, Bob ends up changing things because of his presence without any necessary precautions ends up causing a butterfly effect.

Bob is probably wearing clothes that stand out and he ends up saving the people who saw him come through the portal.

Rick's invention that allows for cross-dimensional communication ends up working so he manages to call Bob. He modified his, Bob's, and Nora's cell phones earlier (he probably brought over a couple cell phones when they traveled to Nora's dimension and gave one to her).

Bob relays what has happened to Rick and Nora while he's in the home of the people he saved.

Nora's the one who first mentions the butterfly effect regarding Bob's actions.

Bob thinks that he time traveled due to his new friends' clothes and appearance and the animals that he's encountered.

Rick immediately wonders about the medical implications of Bob's possible time travel.

The important thing to note is that they don't realize at this point is that Bob is in a dimension different from their home dimension.

Nora suggests that Bob send her pictures of the stars so that she can see if she recognizes any and if she can determine Bob's location in time and place (side note: there has to be a video/camera feature on the phone)

Thanks to Bob's pictures and the pictures Rick had of the night sky from our dimension (he had them stored in a database that he brought with him), Nora is able to determine that Bob has indeed traveled back in time, but is also in a different dimension. The constellations are slightly off from where they should have been based upon the time period that had the megaphonia no matter which time period Nora entered (that also includes where the constellations are located presently).
