Falling Asleep

The darkness of the streets around me was smothering. I pulled my coat across my thin frame to protect myself against the chilling winds. I hated going home at night but it was the only way to get home after my parents were asleep. Going out and dating girls was always going to be risky with paranoid, homophobic parents. I jogged round the corner to feel my heart sink in my chest. The warm glow coming from my living room window was all but comforting. Great. It was movie night. I trudged up my drive way then wrapped my hand around the cold, metal door nob. I drew a shaky breath before slowly pushing open the door.

A warm gust of air greated me as I slipped through the door, throwing of my shoes and coat. The corridor was bathed in warm light coming from the slightly ajar living room door. I stopped outside, my parents were slouched on the sofa, my dad holding the remote listlessly in his hand. On the TV, the news was playing with the familiar colours of the pride flags parading across the screen.

"That's disgusting." My dad spat before changing the channel. My blood boiled and my heart shattered at those two words. Those two words that meant so much to me but fell carelessly from there mouth. How could they say that? I'd heard it countless of times before but it stung so much more when it came from the mind of someone I loved. I reached out my hand as my whole body tensed. I was so ready. So ready to run in and tell them, yell at them. Just try and make them understand, but I couldn't. So I ran. My feet pounding on the wooden stairs and I skidded the corner of our landing. Tears where already welling in my eyes before I made it to my room.

I collapsed onto my bed, curling myself up until I was fully intertwined with sheets and pillows. I buried my face into the softness of my bed, drenching my covers in tears. My sobs were muffled by the fabric and my anguished screams were lost. Time passed in a blur as the tears rolled down my cheek. Eventually, room faded to black around me as i finally closed my eyes.
