Camo walked, eyes constantly sweeping the path in front of her, keeping her eyes out for those things. Those beasts.
She's just about hit the main highway, she can hear a car alarm going off, making her wince. She hates loud noises.
She felt the weight lift off her back and along beside her came Gnaign. His tail wagging and his tongue out. Like a dog begging for a treat.
"I'll get you something when we stop, okay? We gotta keep moving." She told him, like a person would tell a dog.
He just padded along with her. She noticed a difference between him and the other beasts. His skin has little flecks of pink and green. Like the frosting of a pop tart.
She reached down and gave him a pat on the head. Humans are funny. They attach so quickly to other things, like roombas and house plants.
The sun was still up there, blazing. Hot as ever. She wheezed as they walked.
She takes a moment to catch her breath after a while. She can see the miles of cars. So many cars. Some smashed, some burnt, some in pieces. Some covered in blood. No corpses though. They eat everything. Even the bones. Like pigs.
"....we got a little ways before reaching the city. Okay bud? You hang in there." She tells him.
He just barks and yaps like a Pomeranian.
She perks up at the radio crackling again. Then suddenly, there's music. She smiled softly. It's some of that rock her dad used to listen to before he bit the dust. It was a sweet song, it made her miss her family though.
They kept walking until they reached the city. She spotted the remains of an old shopping mall. Shops means supplies. But also those creatures. But she could hole up in a jewelry shop or something, they have unbreakable doors, right?
So she ducked as she walked in through the broken door frame, broken glass lining the sides. She turned and picked up Gnaign.
"You're going into the bag, so you don't get lost or eaten. Okie doki?" She asked, slipping him into the bag, "I'll find you something special. Promise. Be good."
She put the bag back on and kept on going. She walked through the old abandoned Macy's, dodging clothing racks and mannequins that have been over turned.
She looked down at her shoes, she could afford a new pair. She walked to the shoe section. Looking at the mess of shoes before scavenging through it.
She found some men's boots in her size and put them on, ditching her old worn out tennis shoes.
She found a small pair of lady bug rain boots that might fit gnaign. She snatched them up and tucked them into the bag.
She passed the clothing section....a change of clothes sounds great. So she searches the isles, being careful not to make anything break or sound off. She changed right in the open really quick.
No ones got time for changing rooms in the apocalypse.
She then headed out into the rest of the mall. She ducked into the Yankee candles shop when she heard the sound of a creature coming close. She crouched under the counter in the back. Waiting silently.
She listened to it pace for a moment before running off towards the Spencer's while it was distracted. She hid in a circular clothing rack. A tee shirt with a cat pouring one out for the homies laid at her feet.
She gently gave the kittens paw a high five, not wanting to leave it hanging. Her breath hitched when she hear the foot steps of one of the things inside the Spencer's. She curled up around the back pack protectively.
Is she going to protect Gnaign with her life? Yes. Will it be her down fall? Probably.
