Mondays suck, but that’s just a general statement for most people. For me, Mondays really suck. Mondays suck for me cause they’re after Sundays, and Sundays tend to be even more sucktastic than Mondays. Oh, and school starts on Mondays, which always sucks. This particular Monday sucked because it had been a pretty emotional Sunday, what with church and seeing Andrew again. And I had to wake up early, to bright light. So, all in all, Mondays suck.

This Monday, as I attempted to get out of bed, I fell, entangled in my sheets. Right about then, I figured it was going to be a suckish day.

By the time I got to school, I was ready to go right back to sleep. By the time I got home and sat on my bed, I was asleep.

“Gail. Gail, wake up. Gail, your friend Saige is here.” My mom said, shaking me. I groaned, and blinked a few times.

“Whazzgoinon?” I mumbled.

“Saige is here.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know. Just wake up. I’m sending her up in three minutes!” And with that my mom left. I rolled out of bed, took my hairbrush and attempted to brush it, eventually tying it back into a knotty braid because sorta made it look better. Someone knocked on my door.

“You decent?” Saige asked.

“Kind of.” I replied. Saige opened the door.

“Yeah, you aren’t really decent, but we’re best friends, so I suppose I can deal with it.” She said.

“Gee, thanks.” I muttered.

“Just don’t go see Andrew like that.” She laughed. At the mention of Andrew, I sat on the bed and drew in my legs. Saige looked at me.

“What’s going on with you guys?”

“Nothing. Well, not nothing. I saw him yesterday, but it was Sunday, so I looked upset and he wanted to know what was wrong but I wouldn’t tell him and then he tried to worm it out of me and I wouldn’t tell and then he got mad then I got mad then I embarrassed him by asking for his number or email but but but - Ugh! I don’t know, Saige.” I said in a rush. Saige thought for a moment, then plopped down on my bed beside me.

“It’ll be okay.” She said.

“How do you know?” I asked, sadly.

“Because I know you.” She said. “And that you will do anything to fix a problem.” I bit my lip, realizing she was right. She looked at me, her eyes full of honesty. I gave her a hug, and let tears trail out of my eyes.

“I wish my dad was here.” I said, unable to hold back tears.

“I know.” Saige said. “I wish Mr.Gables was here, too. He was a great dad.”

“He was.” I said. We pulled back from the hug, and I rubbed my eyes. I gave Saige a sad smile, trying to pull myself together. I immediately bursted back into tears, prompting Saige to help me lay down, and place a blanket over me.

“Get some sleep, Gail.” She said, and she left the room. A minute later, I heard the door close downstairs, and knew Saige had begun to walk home. I snuggled down under my blanket, and closed my eyes.

Thank God for best friends.

The next time I woke up, my mother hovered over me.

“Hi, Mom.” I said, sitting up and yawning. She smiled at me, and sat down next to me on the bed.

“Is it almost dinner?” I yawned. “I’m pretty hungry.”
