Love. That's what it was. They both knew from the first kiss. Every night they would talk on the phone 'till they fell asleep - or their voices became too hoarse to talk. Every day at school they would spend the whole day together. They would spend every possible moment they could in one another's company, kissing and talking, constantly reminding the other of what love truly was.

But then one day, Cas didn't come in. Dean wouldn't normally be so worried, but after 3 days of no contact with his boyfriend, he became concerned. After calling him non-stop for a whole day, missing those stunning blue eyes so much and wanting those light-pink chapped lips with such great longing, he finally got an answer.

"Cas? Babe, are you okay? Where have you been?" Dean's voice was frantic before Castiel had even had the chance to speak.
"One question at a time, Sherlock." Cas' chuckle was watery. Dean could hear something was wrong as Cas' deep voice crackled, sounding so broken, over the phone.
"Cas. Hey. What's wrong?" Dean heard Cas exhale, long and shaky.
"Dean..." He sounded so hurt, so pained. Dean just wanted to be able to hold his perfect angel in his strong arms, he just wished he could make it all better. "Dean, it - I'm sick." His voice was small and broke on the last word.

And that was it. Dean always made sure to be there for Castiel whenever he needed him, but they both knew no matter how much love he showed him, Dean couldn't make him any better, he couldn't buy him more time.

By the new school year, the Winchester had to push his love around in a wheelchair. Yet the were never unhappy. As long as they were together, they somehow never let the true pain of the situation hurt them, each protecting the other.

But all too quickly, it was another new school year. Dean didn't need to push Castiel around in a wheelchair any longer.
