I mean....I guess it came true, but not the way I expected. It didn't come true the way I expected in the least.

Let me start back at the beginning.

I was in high school when it happened. My parents had taken me to the circus. I wasn't too excited. But, I went. Just to make them happy.

I had been thirsty, so I went to look for a drink before the show started. I had been looking for about five minutes when I saw an argyle tent. It had a sign sewn on that read, "What you ask for now will affect your future forever."

I liked that. I liked that a lot. I turned to my mom. "Can we see what that's about?" I asked.

She hesitated. "I don't know, dear," she said hesitantly.

I gave her my most convincing look--the one where my eyes got big, looking like they belonged on a lost puppy, and my lower lip jutted out just slightly. She sighed. "Puppy eyes won't work this time," she said.

"I think it'll be cool!" I protested. Then, I let my lip shake ever so slightly. "Please, let me see what's in there?" I entreated.

My dad smiled. Then, he turned to my mom. "He's becoming quite a good actor, isn't he?" he asked softly. Then, he added, "We brought him here hoping that something would captivate his interest. Now, something has."

She nodded. "I guess that's true...."

Dad turned to me. "Come on, kid," he said, and I happily followed him into the smoky interior of the tent.

There was a table in the center of the tent. A pretty young woman sat at the table, draped in robes and blankets. She smiled as we entered.

"Come," she said. "Come, and alter your future!"

I was excited. "How exactly do I do that?" I asked her eagerly.

She smiled. "Well," she told me, "You sit at the table." I did as she had instructed. She held her arms out, and cupped my face gently.

"So young, to be meddling with his future," she murmured.

"Can you tell my age?" I asked her, fascinated.

She shrugged, almost imperceptibly. "I can figure out the range," she said. "But not the specific age. There are others that can tell your age. I simply know that you are under eighteen. That's very young, to be meddling with your age. But, I am not here to judge. What is your wish?"

I hesitated. Then, I said, "My...wish?"

She nodded. "What do you want to happen in your future?"
