The Monster Under My Bed

The moon was making strange shadows in my bedroom. It was late at night; mummy had put me to bed a long time ago, but I couldn’t sleep. There was a monster under my bed. It was huge, as big as the Hulk, and bright orange, and had horns on the top of its head, and it was waiting for me to fall asleep to eat me!

I could hear it moving under my bed.

Mummy said that there weren’t any monsters under my bed. I don’t know how she couldn’t see it. Maybe it could turn invisible. Maybe mummies just couldn’t see monsters. Whatever the reason, it was up to me to get the monster under my bed before it got me! But how do you fight a monster from under the bed? I was only a little boy and the monster was humungous!

I needed a weapon. Mummy said weapons were bad, that they hurt good people, but I needed to hurt the monster so that it didn’t hurt me. But what could I use as a weapon? I looked around my bedroom. Normally I wouldn’t be able to see anything this late, I would normally be asleep, but the moon was very bright so I could see my green bedroom walls. I could see my toy chest, the one my daddy made with his daddy a long time ago. I could see my wardrobe; the blue doors were shut so the monster couldn’t hide anywhere else. I could see my bookshelf were I kept my books and pictures of mummy and me and mummy and daddy. Then I saw it; my lightsaber!

I quickly jumped from my bed and rushed to my lightsaber. I picked it up and held it out in front of me.

“I know you’re a big and scary monster from under the bed,” I said. “And I know you want to eat me, and I’m sure I would taste very yummy, like the chicken mummy makes, but you can’t eat me Mr Monster!”

I heard the monster growl, like that mean dog that lives down the street does whenever mummy and I walk past. Then I heard it moving. It was moving out from under my bed. It was coming to get me!

I got very worried, not scared, big boys don’t get scared, just very worried. What if I dropped the lightsaber? What if I couldn’t stop the monster? What if the monster really did eat me?! Mummy would be very sad. I didn't want to make mummy any sadder.

The monster was finally out from under my bed. I could see it now. It was just as big as I said! And bright orange like the ‘Thing’ from the Fantastic Four! And its horns looked very, very sharp.

“I will not let you eat me!” I told the monster in my brave big boy voice.

The monster growled again and marched toward me. The monster got so close I could smell its yucky breath! It smelled like that dead animal I found one time; mummy got very upset about that. When the monster was close enough to touch I smacked my lightsaber into its chest. The monster stumbled backwards and fell down. I moved to were the monster laid slowly.

“If you promise to leave and never ever return, then I will let you go right now,” I told the monster seriously, like mummy would.

Just like that, the monster disappeared from my bedroom floor.

Happy there was no more monster, I put my lightsaber away and climbed back into bed. I fell asleep right away.

The next morning mummy asked me if the monster had kept me up last night. I told her:

“There’s no monster under my bed mummy. There’s nothing to be afraid of!”
