A Birthday To Remember

"Happy birthday Ella!" Liam exclaimed loudly as he handed me a small package wrapped, admittedly not well, in birthday paper, complete with a gold bow on top.

"You got me a present?" I asked the thirteen year old boy with the goofy smile standing in front of me.

"Well yeah, it's your birthday," he explained like it was the most obvious thing in the world, and it kind of was.

"Go on, open it!" he urged me.

"Okay, okay, relax! I'm opening!" I laughed as I begun to open the gift.

When I had unwrapped the paper I was left with a little blue jewellery box in my hands. I was shocked to say the very least.

"You got me jewellery?" I questioned him.

"Just open it!" he said with exasperation.

So I listened to him, just this once, and opened the little blue box. When I saw what was inside, I was left breathless. Inside the jewellery box was a gold chain necklace, but it wasn't the necklace that captured my attention, it was the gorgeous, gold, oval-shaped locket attached to it. I looked closer and saw that 'bestest friends' was inscribed on the oval. I quickly opened the locket and saw my favourite picture of the two of us. In the picture we were probably only eight years old and we were dressed up in the most ridiculous costumes. Liam was a pirate with a hat, patch and bird on his shoulder, and I was a bright pink fairy with wings, a tutu and a wand. We had the stupidest expressions on our faces and we were sticking our tongues out at the camera.

"This is my favourite picture of us!" I said with a smile.

"I know," he answered with a smug smile.

"How did you afford this?" I questioned him, still awed by my present.

"I saved up for a while," was his reply, "Do you like it?"

"Like it? Are you kidding me? I love it!" I squealed at him.

He smiled happily and I launched myself into his arms for a huge hug. He hugged me back just as tightly, lifting me up and spinning me around in his arms. I squealed again, I loved when he did this; it always put a huge smile on my face. We span for a few more seconds before he put me back on solid ground, both of us swaying from all the twirling we had done.

"Will you help me put it on?" I asked him with a smile.

"Sure, turn around," he returned with a smile of his own.

I turned and lifted my hair and he fastened the clasp around my neck. The chain was cold and so was the locket, but it was beautiful.

"Thanks Liam, really. I love it! I'll never take it off! Ever!" I told him when I turned back around.

He just smiled his big goofy smile, the smile that I absolutely loved, and put the gold bow on my head.

Now I would always have a part of my best friend with me wherever I went.
