Jasper's POV

*Before meeting Zachariah*

Jas, wake up!

No. You can't make me. I groan to my wolf, Draven.

You're so lazy. Draven whines. Can we please, please, please go on a run?!

Fine. I roll my eyes. Let me find something to eat, first.

I get up and stretch. I take a look around at the cabin I found a year ago when I escaped. It's small and quaint, but it works for me. I'm happy here.

We'd be happier with our mate. Draven snarks at me.

Our mate. Honestly, I've never thought about having a mate. Whoever is unlucky enough to end up with a lame omega like me, will be better off rejecting me. I could never be a good asset to any pack. And, what will he think of my past?

He will think you're strong and perfect. Draven tries to reassure me.

I don't think so, but maybe. I sigh.

I eat some berries that I gathered a few days ago. It's not the most fulfilling breakfast, but it's better than nothing. And trust me, I've had nothing for days before I escaped them.

I change into my tan and brown wolf then sprint through the woods. I weave in and out of the trees feeling the breeze through my fur. I come to a halt at a waterfall. The mist from the water hitting my face. It's refreshing. I drink some of the water in the pool beneath. I decide to bask here in the sun until nighttime. Soon falling victim to the warmth causing me to fall into a deep sleep.

I jolt awake when I hear growling and branches breaking. Panic is rising in my chest making my heart beat rapidly.

Jasper. You need to run. Draven warns me.

What?! I panic. I think I'm surrounded.

I stand up and take a step forward towards the cabin. A black, muddy wolf appears 10 feet in front of me. Rogue. He is 3 times my size. His eyes are dark red and his fangs are protruding out of his mouth. I can't help noticing that the fangs are stained with blood. I take a few steps backward in an attempt to bolt the opposite direction. Suddenly, I feel a warm breath cascade down my body. I turn to look behind me and see a wolf identical to the one in front of me.

Run! Draven yells.

I dart past both wolves and towards a clearing on the opposite side of the waterfall. I hear the thundering footsteps of the wolves chasing behind me. They sound like they're getting closer.

Do you smell that?! Draven says with excitement.

I'm a little too busy to be paying attention to smells. I snap back. Is that... it smells like cinnamon and apples.

Follow the scent! Mate! He jumps with joy. It's our mate!

I speed toward the spine tingling smell. It's getting stronger and stronger.

I think I'm almost there. I pant. It's been a long time since I've pushed myself this hard.

Keep going! Mate will protect us. Draven tries to comfort me.

All of a sudden, I'm tackled to the ground. One of the rogues holding me down with both paws on my chest. His saliva raining down on my face. I attempt to push him off me with my hind legs, but he doesn't budge. Instead, he clamps his jaw into my shoulder. I hiss in pain. I build up the strength to kick him off of me. He stumbles backwards and I take this opportunity to keep running. I crossover a pack border.
