It was 27 degrees outside in Rochester, MN this February, Thursday afternoon. Corey pulled his hat down again as the wind began to blow it off. "Man, I hate the cold." He complained as tears began to fall from his eyes from the powerful wind. It was too cold to keep wiping his eyes, so he left his hands in his pockets.

"Why do we even have to go to school in the winter time?" His friend, Sammy, complained.

"I don't know, it's stupid." As they walked home, they held minimal conversation because it was too cold to walk and talk at the same time.

"You know that parent basketball game is coming up at the rec." Sammy reminded him.

"I know." Corey mumbled, not caring too much about it.

"My dad signed us up. Me and him... is your dad any good?"

Corey sighed as he thought of a quick lie. "Yeah, he is really good. He played back in New York, that's where he lives. He can't come play in the game though because he has a bad knee."

Sammy nodded in understanding and Corey was thankful that he didn't ask anymore questions. He hated having to come up with lies about his dad. He came up with so many lies and stories that he had begun to believe them.

His mind began to wander to his father and his whereabouts. He only knew so much and his mother wouldn't tell him anything.

Entering the neighborhood, both boys let out a sigh of relief. They lived right across the street from one another and they were finally able to get out of this cold weather. "See you tomorrow, dude." Corey said as they approached their homes. They shook hands.

"See you, bro." Sammy replied, going the opposite way.

Corey walked across the street to make it to his home. They didn't have keys, they had the fingerprint and passcode door knob. He had to remove his glove to put his fingerprint on the scanner to get inside.

As soon as he walked inside, Fendi, the dog jumped up on him.
