I look up at harry, a shocked expression on my face. What did he mean I'd be staying with him. I can't just leave my house and Mr. Wallows. That's against the law.

"What?" I ask, confused.

"I'm going to... talk to some people, and get you out of Mr. Wallows house. And once you're out, I'm going to adopt you," Harry explains to me.

I hesitate before speaking. "Why?" I ask, still confused. He looks to only be in his mid twenties. Does he really want to adopt me? I am 15 after all. He should be living his life, not taking care of a teenager.

"Because I don't want you being stuck in an awful place like that," he says. "You're too sweet of a girl for someone to treat you with disrespect. I think we'd be good for each other, too. It's been getting a little lonely here with no family nearby."

I nod my head. "I won't get in trouble?" I ask. All I can't think about is how mad Mr. Wallows will be when I'm not living with him anymore.

"Why would you be getting in trouble, sweetie?" Harry asks. He looked confused.

"Mr. Wallows told me never to tell anyone anything or else he'd get really mad at me," I whisper, feeling nervous again.

"He's not going to be able to do anything to you. Don't you worry about him, okay?" Harry says.

"Okay," I say. I was still unsure about the whole situation, but I decided to trust Harry.

"Let me show you your room. I'm sure you're pretty tired, huh?" Harry changes the subject. He probably noticed my massive eye bags.

"Yeah, a little," I tell him. I didn't realize how tired I was until he brought it up. I could fall asleep in this chair if I wanted to.

Harry pats my back before standing up. "Come on, follow me," he says.

I hop off the stool and follow him. "It's a little plain right now since it hasn't really been used, but we can get some new furniture and paint it any color you want later," Harry tells me as we walk up the stairs.

We walk to the end of the hallway. There were two doors on each side. "This is your room, right across from mine," Harry points out my room, which was on the same side as the stairs. "If you need anything, you can always come into my room."

"Okay," I say.

We walk into my new room. Harry was right, it was plain. I didn't mind, though. Harry didn't even know I'd be living here until tonight, anyway.

The room was fairly big and it had white walls. A bed was pressed against one of the walls and there was a large window facing the neighbors house.

Next to the window there was a walk in closet. The doors were partially opened and I could tell that there were plenty of shelves and storage areas inside.

"What do you think?" Harry asks. "And, again, I promise you, we'll make this room much more suited for a teenager later."

"It's perfect. Thank you," I say. I look over at Harry and he smiles down at me. My eyes begin to water, feeling a little overwhelmed at Harry's generosity, and I wipe a few tears away with my hand.

"What's wrong, Maddi?" Harry asks. He lowers down to my level, looking at me with concern. His eyebrows furrow together and he rests a hand on my shoulder.

"I feel... like I don't deserve all of this," I say quietly. "I didn't do anything."

"Aw, Maddi," Harry coos. He pulls me into a hug which I willingly fall into. "That breaks my heart, hearing you say that. You don't have to do anything to deserve love."

He pulls away from the hug. "Do you understand, sweetie?" He asks. He looked sad.

"I understand," I say.

"Good," Harry says. He strokes my hair before standing up. "Now lets get you some more comfortable clothes to sleep in."

I look down at my ragged jeans and dirty T-shirt. I couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed. It looks as if I don't know how to dress myself, but I really just didn't have any money to buy clothes.

"Wait right here and I'll be right back," Harry says. He walks out of the room and I see him go into his room.

He returns just moments later with a black T-shirt and gym shorts. "They might be a little big for you, but it'll do for the night, right?" Harry chuckles while handing me the clothes.

I nod my head and take the clothes. "Thank you," I say.

"You're welcome, darling. The bathroom is right next door. You can go get ready for bed in there," Harry says. I nod my head and leave the room, heading into the bathroom.

Once inside, I take all my clothes off except for my underwear. I looked really sick. There were bags under my eyes, my skin was pale, I had bruises on my arms, stomach, and legs from Mr. Wallows, and I looked very thin.

I quickly put Harry's clothes on so I don't have to look at myself any more than I have to. Right as I'm about to leave, I hear a soft knock on the door.

"Maddi?" Harry asks.

"Y-yes?" I ask, anxious. Maybe he realized that this whole thing was a mistake and he wants to send me back. Maybe he'll hurt me just like Mr. Wallows did.

"I've got a toothbrush and toothpaste out here for you. Can I come in?" He says.

It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders knowing that he isn't making me go back yet. "Yes," I say, allowing him to come in.

He comes in and places the items on the counter. "I'll leave them right here," he says. "And I'll take these clothes and get them washed tonight. We can get you a new wardrobe soon, too." He looks at me, as if asking for confirmation to take my clothes, and I see his eyes fill with sadness. He probably thought the bruises were pathetic.

I nod my head and he takes the clothes and leaves, leaving the door slightly ajar. I hear his footsteps return to the room I was staying in.

I quickly brush my teeth, too tired to follow that 'two minute rule' that my mom used to tell me about before she had to give me up.

My mom told me it was because she wasn't able to support me and wanted me to live in a home where I'd have opportunities and no struggles, but I know she just didn't want me. She would much rather drink and use drugs than spend time with me.

I walk back to the room where Harry has the covers pulled down so I can get into bed.

I walk over and lay down, Harry putting the covers back over me once I was in. "Goodnight, Maddi," he says, kissing the top of my head. "I don't know how you're feeling right now... I know it must be confusing and hard, but just know I'm not going to allow anything or anyone to hurt you. If you need me at all tonight, my room is right across from yours."
