I was born without a string. Everyone had one, except me... or at least that I know of.
Red strings connected soulmates, always on the right hand pinky. Each person could see their own string and often followed it to find who they were meant to be with. Girls would gossip about who their dream boy was, boys would joke about how pretty their girl was.
I wasn't like that. In fact, I was bullied for not being like that. "Alice, the girl without a soulmate." "Alice, the girl so ugly that the universe even denied her a lover." "Alice, the loner." The only ones who accept me are Kyleigh, my best friend and Charlie, Kyleigh's soulmate. Even my parents shunned me for not having a soulmate whenever I brought the topic up. (I don't talk about it anymore)
One day, Charlie and Kyleigh were going out to get coffee, and asked me to join. Kyleigh said that she had found someone she wanted me to meet.
Once I had arrived, I saw Charlie and Kyleigh in the corner of the small shop, saving a seat for me and, I'm guessing, the person Kyleigh wants me to meet. I sit down and we wait to order until mystery person arrives.
Kyleigh and Charlie flirt with each other playfully as I quietly watch the busy street through a window. I suddenly see this beautiful girl walk up to the shop, the bell ringing as she enters. I feel an odd pull towards this girl, as Kyleigh ushers her over. I stand, feeling the need to, as I make eye contact.
"I'm Alice," I state, outstretching a hand.
As she takes my hand to shake, a sudden tug pulls at my right pinky. We both look down to see a streak of red connecting our pinkies. I quickly look back up at her and we both laugh.
"Luna," she smiles, before pulling me into a hug.
