(M/n) sighed, rubbing her crying child's back in soothing circles. Poor (S/b) was hiccupping and wailing to their heart's content.
Y/n stood moodily in the corner, having been put in timeout. He watched them with shadowed eyes.
After (S/b) settled down some, (M/n) passed them off to (F/n), who gave her a worried look before promising his little (girl/boy) to make them a delicious cup of hot cocoa. (S/b) gingerly followed their father to the kitchen.
(M/n) did not have such a lighthearted task ahead of her, however. She stood up and walked over to Y/n, who was still silent and watching in the corner.
She kneeled so she was eye level with him when she asked, "Why did you do that, Y/n? Why did you hit your (brother/sister)?"
Y/n's stare turned into a glare, "Because I don't get it."
(M/n) placed a soothing hand on her son's shoulder, "You don't get what, hunny?"
"I don't get why (she/he) cries when I hit (her/him)," the little boy muttered stubbornly.
(M/n) blinked her wide eyes in surprise, "It hurts when you get hit. That's why? How would you like it if (S/b) hit you?" She punched her son lightly in the shoulder to emulate the feeling.
Y/n displayed no outward reaction. "I don't get (S/b)," he continued to say.
"What don't you get?"
"(S/b) laughs," said Y/n, like it explained his strange behavior.
Confusion swam in (M/n)'s eyes. "You laugh too, sweetheart —"
Y/n shook his head, "(S/b) laughs even when they're alone. Why does (she/he) do that?"
(M/n)'s brows furrowed. "I imagine," she said sweetly, "it's because (he's/she's) found something worth laughing at. Something funny?"
Y/n looked at his mother like she had suddenly grown three heads.
"I thought the only reason people laughed was because other people laugh," the little boy admitted. "When I see you or daddy laugh, that's how I know to laugh."
(M/n) blinked rapidly, unsure of how to handle her son's odd way of thinking. It sounded off.
"Well..." she thought a long while. "Why do you think the first person laughs?"
"I... don't know," Y/n said as though he had never thought about that before. "It doesn't make any sense."
(M/n) looked at her son strangely. Not knowing what else to do she patted his shoulder twice.
"Don't worry, hunny. One day you'll understand."
After all, maybe some kids had to grow into their emotions.
