Diana arrived at Green Gables a few days before the fall semester was to start. She would be leaving soon to spend three months in Carmody to teach at the little school. She would come home on most weekends so she and Anne would miss each other but still have the weekends. Anne promised to come a few weekends with her in Carmody and they could pretend they were roommates again.
Their time together at Queens had been so precious and they both missed the night time chats and doing everything together. Diana understood Anne's extra responsibilities at Green Gables though and she could certainly comprehend when Anne needed to spend so much time with Gilbert. Soon he'd be half way across the country in Toronto, Ontario and their distance would be painful this year.
As she walked up the porch steps, Anne walked out with a surprised look. "Diana??? I wasn't expecting you today? Did you forget Gilbert and I are going to Charlottetown with Delphine?" I am just heading to meet them now" said Anne. She had forgotten that they were going for a visit to see Mary's friends from the bog and Elijah who was doing a few construction jobs in the area. Bash and and Muriel were busy packing Muriel's things for the move and making last minute plans for their ceremony.
"Is everything OK? You seem distracted?" Anne asked her.
"I'm fine... I just forgot you were going. I'll come and see you tomorrow. I want to spend a bit of time with you to go over my teaching notes" said Diana.
"That sounds great" she said. With this Diana left. She decided that she would make the long walk around the property before heading home to take advantage of the beautiful August morning. Who was she kidding, she was hoping to run into Jerry because she'd been unable to get him out of her head the last five days. She spotted him in the now high cornfields and moved through them until she was in front of him. He was clearly deep in thought because he jumped at the sight of her grabbing at his chest to settle himself down. She looked at him sternly, trying to convey a message with her face.
"Oh my gosh Diana! You scared me. He was shockingly handsome in the morning light and Diana wished he wasn't so. He wore a pair of brown work trousers that appeared small against his growing frame. His equally small undershirt with cut off sleeves was tight against his tanned skin. His cotton shirt was tied in a knot around his hips. His dark hair fell into his eyes and he swept it back with a quick swing of his head while he kept working at the corn stalks.
"Maybe you shouldn't be so sneaky and you wouldn't feel so on edge" she said, crossing her arms in front of her chest. She couldn't help but look at his lips as he studied her.
He looked embarrassed knowing full well what she meant about sneaking around.
"I'm sorry, but the other night I wasn't thinking clearly. I feel terrible! I would never see myself as someone who would kiss another person when I'm in a relationship! It's shameful. I don't know how I could do that to Amélie, she's so kind".
"Yes, I can't believe you would do that either. What do you have to say now?" Diana said, looking rather judgmental.
"Well, I ended up talking to my mom about it".
"What!!! Oh my God Jerry. What will she think of me!" Diana said now looking a bit disjointed about her own part.
"Don't worry, I didn't name names. But I told her, me and this girl, we are from different worlds. His French accent was driving her mad. Not me and this girl, this girl and I - she thought.
"Look I needed to understand what was happening with me and she's really good at understanding people". Jerry's mother was indeed a people person. She had a way of looking at you where you felt she knew your soul. Jerry had this same quality about him at times and he looked so much like his mother it was hard to not love him.
