"How's the cheesecake?"
Jungmo asked, attempt to start a conversation with the girl, but her short replies were making it hard for him . On the other hand,Mina was very mad about her withdrawal from the play and her mind was stil blank to see him. Why was he there? Where did he live? This wasn't their neighborhood where the chances of bumping to each other is high. This was a big city in America, and both of them are a foreigner.
"It's okay"
"Why were you-"
"Why did you sent me letters if you didn't wrote your address? Where did you live? Near here? Or another city?"
"I just-"
"Wait, maybe you were a student at Jen's university,so she was right! Damn I should have stay there!"
"Mina let me ex-"
"But why were you at my academy? Do you study there? Or your girlfriend study-"
"Mina,slow down. "
She finally realized how the curiosity in her mind got her to be spitting everything in her mind. Embarrassed, she sipped her cold tea slowly and thrown her gaze to the busy streets. A woman stopping a yellow cab,a group of teenagers hanging out, laughing happily and good looking white men with coats and busy talking to someone on the other line of the phone.
For sure this was her dream to be here, but to failed when she couldn't even settled down yet was making her thinking ,was it worth it?
"My letters were different because, I sent it myself,to your house. I lived nearby, and probably close to you. Before you think I stalked you, no I don't. Eunbi told me you were here, and you came here by my mother company foundation. I just knew it a month ago and when I asked her how on Earth she knew about you,she told me my dad recorded you performance during our play"
Mina eyes widen ,and everything seems to click together. The name Koo Ra In on the bottom of her scholarship letter seems too familiar. She met his mother once or twice during grocery shopping, and she was nice. She should have called her if she got her mind straight back then.
Jungmo took a deep breath and sigh seeing how the girl seems to have difficulty on clicking every piece of information she got. He leaned in ,but not too close as the table seperate them was wide enough for social distancing.
"I don't know which Jen you are talking about, but I don't study there. A friend of mine was there so I went to support him. And I don't have a girlfriend. Now let me ask you"
He grabbed her wrist , causing the girl to be startled a bit but maintain the face she had. The boy, no the man stood in front of her was now too gorgeous as if he had went through some glow up ever since he left Korea. The sharp gaze wasn't infuriating, but it held some some soft spot where she once saw it when they were at his home, and she don't want to remember that.
"You never call when I left, even before that. When you get here,Yulhee told me you changed your number so I kind of get it the reason why you never call. But before, why you never once answered?"
She looked into his brown orbs, and somehow she saw how painful he was when he ask her those questions. It was her fault for being ego ,but she knew starting a relationship with him would go nowhere and eventually break up. Probably some might thought she was stupid to think that ,and Minjae proved her right after all.
"I was too busy. Sorry"
"Lying is what you do best Yoo Mina. It's good that I ask Minjae before I went away"
Hearing his words ,she let go of the man grip on her wrist and mentally cursed Minjae for telling him everything . That damned bastard, I'm going to kill you.
"I won't ask about it again. But seeing you crying infront of the theater entrance was something. Why did you cry?"
"I got kicked out in honour." She stated flatly, the rage coming back to her eyes and she ruined the perfect cheesecake before entering the ruined part to her mouth. Thank god it still tasted like heaven.
"It seems you might fail this assignment I see. " He said, eyeing the pity cake and changed his gaze to her puffy cheeks stuffed with the sweet food.
"I can work at somewhere, earning some credits from other plays at the outside. A small part as a nurse or a maid might help me pass this. A musical, being a background dancer or singers was enough for me to continue my studies. I can't afford to pay back the scholarship. I wonder how Eunbi got the main character or second lead, when all I got was a woman scrubbing the annoyingly shining floor stage while reciting 'yes my lady' for the past 10 minute"
She stated everything in a single breath, her hand busy ruined the cake and somehow she was relieved to let all everything,to a person who understand her language, not to mention he wasn't a stranger but someone she had knew since she was a kid.
"Have you looked anywhere?"
"I knew this might happened so I prepared before hand. I got a call two days ago that they were about to start practicing tomorrow night, and discuss the parts together. Honestly, I don't care much what will I get,I just want to do the play. It's fun to be up there, looking aat the audience. " She said, slowly stopping her rough action on the crumbs and looked at him, smiling weakly.
"I'll take you there tomorrow. Since it's night I might just wait for you. I don't have classes at morning. So it's okay"
Her eyes lit up,and she nodded eagerly. Jungmo smiled and sipped his coffee, and he wasn't sure whether the warm coffee or the burning sensation in his heart was making him flustered seeing how she smiled ear to ear and ordered a new cheesecake.
