Broken

The sun had faded away from the sky and the moon had quietly crept in. It has been months since the rain visited mother Earth with her presence and this has made every nook and cranny too hot to inhabit.

Uchenna had left the office, as soon as she got the note signifying her indefinite suspension at the office. She had worked with Flo Corporations as to their accountant for 5 years. She was a fresh graduate, who just finished the compulsory One Year Service and since she made good grades at school, it wasn't difficult for her to get herself a befitting job, unlike many Nigerian youths, who would have roamed the streets with their file jackets, containing any piece of information, a potential employer might request.

As soon as she left the premises of Flo Corporations, Uchenna barged into a nearby spot called 'The Hangout".  The decision her boss took over a minor mistake had thrown her off balance, knowing full well, that she had always put in her best, ever since she started working at Flo Corporations. At 'The Hangout', Whitney had spent the remaining hours of the day, drinking, tasting different blends of alcoholic drinks. She drank till she was wasted, yet she cared not, as she urged herself on.

At about 11:30 pm, Uchenna stood up and decided, it was time to get going. She staggeringly stood up and offset her bills. And found her way to the gate of the spot. She walked into the parking lot to drive home and she fell, and she started laughing hysterically. Uchenna tried to get back on her feet but kept falling.

A dark figure was approaching the lonely road on which Uchenna was standing, waiting for a ride home. She had a bad day at work, as she exchanged words with her boss. Everything started to play in her head again and questions sprang up from their hidden caves. How would our boss believes, she intentionally made such an expensive mistake, knowing it could end her career? Why would the new girl at the office be the one called upon to take up her position, while she is on suspension? Why not Frank, who has worked with that company longer than herself?

Uchenna was still in her place of confusion

"Hey! What are you doing out here this late?"
Uchenna feigns deafness

It is too risky for a pretty woman to be out here all alone by herself at this odd hour.

"I can take care of myself and I don't need your opinion"

Sure, you can take care of yourself, but it is obvious that today, you lost that power. So where do you stay, so I can drop you off

"Whatever (she says in a low tone). She didn't want to go with him, but how then will she get back to her house which was about an hour drive from where she stood at the moment.

She sighs but gradually follows him to his car.

Did she just follow him to her doom or her gloom?

Well, we will find out soon!
