we were heroes once
donned with our capes
life celebrated
until the downfall came

now we beg –
    for the sun to warm us
    the air to lift us
    the sky to cheer us
    but it never came

we’ve won battles,
lost wars;
bruised and bleeding
but we’ve lost so much more –

    our innocence,
    our smile,
    our will;
we’ve lost them all

they’ll be back
but i don’t want them
the pieces won’t fit anymore –
we’re gone.
