The New Girl

{4} First Day

I wake up in the morning to find the piglets were not born yet. "You ready for school today?" Grandmum asks as I come down stairs with my backpack. "Ready as I'll ever be" I say eating chocolate chip waffles. "Im going to drive you in today just to make sure everything goes alright." "Good I don't really want to walk in alone." After I finish up breakfast I kiss grandpas cheek goodbye and we drive off to my first day of American school.

When we get there we walk inside to the main office. "Hi I'm Ruby Max this is my granddaughter Melody Jones. I enrolled her a few days ago. She just moved here from the Uk." She says to the lady. "Oh yes let me get our principle" she says going in a back room. "This way please" she says coming back out and showing us into his office. We walk in and he is sitting at his desk looking through his computer. "Hi I'm principle Thornton. Welcome to Liberty high." he says shaking our hands. "Ruby" grandmum says shaking his hand. "This is my granddaughter Melody" she says as he moves his eyes to me and reaches his hand out to shake my hand "hello Melody" "hello" I say as we drop our hands and he gestures us to sit down. "Okay so here is our student handbook. It just has our policy's like dress code and what not. Uhm so right now." He clicks his tongue while scrolling on his computer. "We are just going to... need ..you to..." he turns the computer towards me while still looking at it. "Pick you classes. So you actually moved at good timing since you haven't really completed any classes yet we won't have to transfer credits but, before you got to high school from what I have it's says you took an A level math class so since you did that it actually transfers to here so you'll have one less math credit to take. With that said I don't know if you enjoy it or not. Uhm so yeah let's just look through these." He scrolls the the first block options. "We start school at 830 and we get out at 335 and there are 8 blocks. Which is stated in the handbook. So what are you interested in like what subject?" "Science" I say with no hesitation. He chuckles. "Okay! We have numerous different science classes actually. We are really heavy in the science department and we are also involved with Shanigan science industries! So if your interested in that we can get you in with that as well! Is that something you'd be interested in?" "Yeah for sure! I'm already involved with it because my mum and dad did research for them in Britain! They have a big lab in Britain which they help them open up" I say kind of excitedly. "Well I'll be! No wonder why your a science kid!" He says and we laugh. Me and grandmum sign a paper saying we agree to the handbook and go through and pick out my schedule. I am doing English 101, Chemistry, Biology, Health and Wellness, science intermediate, Photography, World History, and Journalism. We go to the lunch room and set up my lunch account. Then I say goodbye to my grandmum and principle Thornton takes me to my first class which is English 101. He first takes me to my locker to drop off things I don't need them we walk to English 101. We walk in and everybody in the classroom stares at us. "Good morning principle Thornton" the teacher says. "This is our new student Melody! She will be in your class for English 101" "awesome. Hi Melody come on in! You can sit anywhere you'd like. There's an open seat right as I walk in the door so I sit there quickly putting my stuff down. Principle Thornton is gone now. "Hi Melody! Welcome to Midtown high! So in my class at the beginning of the semester we always do an about me and I know being a new kid is Nerv racking and all but would you mind just standing up and saying a few things about yourself?" "I nod my head and stand up slowly and hesitantly not looking anybody in the eye just at the teacher. "I am from Cambridge, Britain. It's a town by London." I say normally and I see people's eyes get wide and have surprised looks. "Like Great Britain? Like your from Great Britain" A kid asks. I shyly nod my head yes. "And what brings you all the way to Tennessee Melody?" The teacher asks smiling. I choke at hearing this not really knowing what to say. "Uhm.. my uh.. well my mum and dad died so uhm. My grandparents live here and I uh.. I live with them now." I say looking down at my desk. "Oh my I'm so sorry for your loss." She grabs my hand and holds it. I look up and give her the tiniest smile. "So how old are you?" "Sixteen" "so a sophomore?." I nod. "Uhm what's your favorite color?" "Blue" "what about your favorite American food?" "Does bacon count?" She laughs. "Absolutely." She says as the bell rings "okay class finish the journal entry for homework have a good day!" She says walking back to her desk. I pull out my paper to see what the room number for my next class is and I walk up to the teacher to ask where it is. "Hello uhm do you know where d112 is?" I ask her. "Yes go all the way down the hall to the right and take a left at the end of the hall and you'll see it!" "Thank you!" I say walking out the door and to my photography class. I find the class and the teacher is standing outside the door. I walk up to her and shake her hand to greet her. "Hello I'm Melody. I'm the new." "Oh that's right! Come on in!" She says and I follow her to her desk. "Here's a few papers these are the only important ones. And you can sit wherever you'd like! It's so nice to meet you!" She says with a sincere smile. I give her a nod and slight smile and look out at the tables. I then see a familiar face waving me over to them. Gesturing that I sit next to them. I walk over with my stuff and sit down. "Hey! I didn't know you were gonna go to school here" Tom says smiling at me. "Yeah it's close to grandmum and grandads house and it has a good science program." "No way?! You like science too?!" "I love science. My parents were crazy scientists. They actually opened Shanigan Labs" "woah that's so cool! Are you going to intern?" "Uhm yeah I think so" "well your basically in just by getting enrolled here." He says and we laugh as the teacher calms everybody down and starts speaking. "Good morning everybody. So, we have a new girl apart of our class now! If you would like to stand up and tell the class a few things about yourself!" She says looking at me. I shyly stand up and look at the students scattered across the room. "Uhm my names Melody, I just moved here from Great Britain, my favorite subject is science and my favorite tv show is F.R.I.E.N.D.S." I say looking out seeing shocked faces. "Wait like the UK Great Britain? Like London Britain?" A kid says very interested. "Yeah I'm from Cambridge which is outside of London" "woah" he says still shocked. "What's you favorite part of America so far?" Mrs.Max asks. "Uhm well my grandparents farm is pretty cool" I say sitting back down. "Well that's pretty neat! Okay class let's get our cameras and we'll head out to start our next project. Everybody pic a partner and you'll be taking pictures of things that go along with a theme of your choosing." She says and Tom immediately comes to me. "Your my partner" he says grabbing a camera and gesturing me to follow him. We head outside and look around thinking of a theme we could do. "We could do like an ocean theme. Like take picture of things you could see on a beach and in the water. Kind of nature-y?" Tom says coming with the idea. "Yeah I like that" we get started on our project taking pictures here and there as we walk around. "So was your mom or dad from Tennessee?" "My mum. My dad visited for science lab conventions and they met and got married here in Tennessee then moved to Britain. Then they had me and sort of opened their own science labs." "That's why you like science so much." "Yeah it's kinda in my blood I guess. They were both scientists. They never had a lot of free time but when they did they spent it with me. We would always go to museums and I'd always go into their lab and help them. We'd have so much fun." I said looking down at my hands again. "They seem like they were really cool" "yeah they were." I say smiling. We keep working on our project for the rest of class. The rest of the day kind of goes by quick. I had Tom in all of my classes except for 1st and 4th block periods, so he showed me around to classes and around the school and stuff.

At the end of the day I go to my locker and grab my stuff and meet Grandad outside. "How was school?" "Good. I saw Tom in most of my classes so he helped me around the school today." "Well that's cool!" He says turning down the road to get to the house. "We're the piglets born yet?" "Yep! They were born this afternoon. Not too long before I left to pick you up!" He says smiling as we drive the rest of the way home. For the rest of the drive we just talk about how our days went. We get home and as soon as we get out of the car we smell a delicious scent in the air. "Pie!" Grandad says looking at me excited then basically run through the back door. I follow him in and grandmum is pulling pie out of the oven and setting it on the stove to cool. "Apple pie?" Grandad aks. Grandmum nods her head smiling. Hearing this, grandad goes to the freezer and pulls out a giant tub of vanilla ice cream. We all sit down and eat the pie enjoying the afternoon. I go out with grandad once we're done with pie and look at the piglets. They are so cute! Then we all go outside and to the hay loft to clean it up so we can build a hangout just like my mom did. Grandad turns on the radio and a weird sounding song comes on but it's really catchy. "Chasin that neon rainbow, livin that honky tonk dream" grandad sings doing a little dance with grandmum. "What song is this?" I ask confused. "Only one of the best granddaughter. Chasin that neon rainbow by Alan Jackson" he says then going back to singing and dancing. I kind of like this music. He grabs my hand then pulls me to dance with him. We dance to the rest of the song then get back to cleaning. After we've cleaned a while in the hayloft we go back to the house and eat some dinner. Afterwards we watch a movie of my choosing. Of course I chose The Amazing Spider-Man. After the movie we all went to bed. I called Claire to see if she was awake. "What?" She asks on the other end of the phone. "Are you awake?" "No" "I don't care. So today was my first day at school and it was pretty fun!" I told her everything. About how Tom was there and what classes I was taking. Every detail. "That's wicked! Now I'm tired goodnight." She says. "Night love you" "love you more"she says hanging up. I curl into bed and fall asleep. Ending the great day with a great nights sleep.

Sorry that was a really long chapter. But we got to see her first day at school and her friendship start to grow with Tom. They are both shy people so it'll take time before they get to be best friends. The next chapter we're gonna see her start getting involved at school and more so on the farm.
