Maggie and Kurt sat on a cold bench, laughing so hard that tears streaked their faces. Their dynamic had gone from timid and quiet to loud and intimate. They had blurted out their deepest held secrets to each other that night without a second thought.
There was this impalpable trust between them. It had appeared out of nowhere and continued to grow as they talked endlessly. This understanding of one another seemed to blossom quickly as they chatted, like it had been underlying for many weeks.
Maggie felt so calm, and so did Kurt. He normally felt so self-loathing and terrified, but Maggie made those feelings melt away temporarily. She was like a summer breeze after a long harsh winter. Her warmth drew Kurt closer and made him not want to return to the frigid reality of life without her. It was strange how she felt the exact same way.
"We get along better than I thought we would," Maggie admitted, still giggling slightly. Kurt nodded in agreement. "I'm glad you don't hate me," Kurt said, causing maggie to roll her eyes. "I don't know why you thought I'd hate you for some stupid mistake," she muttered, shaking her head pitifully and taking a drag of her cigarette.
Kurt sighed shamefully. "Fine, I'll stop talking about it." Maggie smirked slightly, making Kurt mirror her. "Thanks," she said. The two then sat in silence as Maggie smoked. It was frigid, but the two didn't care. The company of another person was adequately warming.
Kurts mind raced. Maggie made him think and analyze himself like never before. She was a powerful source of fear in his mind and made him terrified at the thought of tripping up and making a fool of himself, but he also felt incredibly comfortable and like he could share his thoughts and feelings with her. It was a bizarre combination of emotions.
"Do you like stripping?" Kurt asked suddenly. Maggie turned towards him, her eyebrows knitting together in reflection. She hummed quietly and exhaled a cloud of nauseating smoke. "Not really, no," she muttered, shame bubbling in the pit of her stomach. She wasn't proud of what she did, but it paid the bills and felt like all she was good at sometimes.
"I think it's the only talent I've got, though," she said, laughing dryly. She dropped her cigarette onto the pavement and stomped it out with the sole of her boot. Kurt pursed his lips, unsure of what to say next. Maggie could sense his discomfort. She sighed. "It's fine. Maybe I'll end up going back to school some day.." she said. It was a measly attempt at offering Kurt some reassurance. She didn't even believe the half hearted words that she forced out.
"What do you want to do?" He asked. She smiled the tiniest bit. "I want to be a doctor." She said, almost laughing at how delusional her dream sounded. Kurt found out their ambitions were very different. He loathed the thought of any type of educational institution. His brief experience with high school had been an absolute nightmare that drained him. He had a strange trauma from the ordeal.
But nonetheless, he wanted to be supportive.
"I believe that you can do it." He said quietly, nodding his blonde head. "That makes one of us." She muttered, leaning back against the bench. The metal was cold and stiff against her spine. Kurt snorted and rolled his eyes.
"Have some hope, Maggie." The words felt just as silly as Maggie's confession. He did not carry a grain of optimism for himself or his road ahead, but Maggie was so electrifyingly smart and mysterious, that he knew somehow that she'd be just fine, even if he had to force the slightly optimistic, positive words.
She laughed lowly. "Alright, I have hope for you and the band." She said, making Kurt groan pessimistically. "You don't need to lie to me," he muttered, shaking his head. Maggie rolled her eyes and delivered a soft jab to his side. "Shut up..." she whispered, sighing.
She stood up. "We should probably go home now." Kurt nodded in agreement, although saddened to be parting ways with Maggie. "We need to hang out more. I like you," she said, wrapping her arms around her midsection. Kurts smitten heart skipped a beat.
"Y-Yeah, lets do that," he managed, clearing his throat.
Maggie smiled at him, before exiting the park, and walking down the sidewalk, the click of her heels growing distant as the moments passed.
