The man turned on the camera and the girl's face came into view.
She sat on a plastic chair at the other end of the room.
He pressed the 'record' button before sitting across from her.
They sat in silence, staring into each other's souls
As if searching for fear or reluctance in the other

If one said 'no'
Then everything would stop
The experiment would end
And they would return home
Although home was just a mass
Of trepidation and ruins

Secret words passed between them
Words that would change the world
Words that would spark neverending joy
And feed scientific innovation
But would give birth to confusion,
Displacement,
And eventually pain

If the girl changed her mind,
Would she be able to return to her place?
Would she be able to embrace the familiar darkness that she called home?
The man assured her that such a thing would never happen
Because she would never wish to return
She would be eternally happy
She would live in sweet comfort
In the glass palace built by 'them'
And she would call it 'home.'
