I take a few steps perpendicular to the pavement just in time for the runners, who are coming around again, to never even know I was there. I walk through dense shrubs and trees for a while ignoring the thorns scratching at my legs like an angry cat until a metal fence appears blocking my new self-made path. It doesn’t take much following to discover a small hole just big enough for either two small fat animals or one tall bony teenager to squeeze through. I get my body half way through the opening when a pain signal shoots from my right arm to my brain. The crudely cut metal of the fence is all the evidence I need to know what happened. I lift the sleeve of my jacket revealing a long thin slice in the skin of my forearm. The similar surrounding scars welcome it like a new resident in a friendly neighborhood. Ignoring the pain I’m all too used to I drop my sleeve which quickly gets stained in blood and continue deeper into what seems to be uncharted territory.
