“Looks Can Be Deceiving”
Story by T. Trozzi ( @rainbow_tea2063 on IG)

“Good morning, Mr. Watkins.  The usual?”

***

It’s been a normal day for my friend Jonathan and I. Get coffee, chat, walk around on the sidewalk.  The sky is clear, and many people are out today.  Nothing less than what I'd expect, since it's always pretty crowded here in New York City.  Something seems a bit off, though. There's been murders recently.  Some say that the murderer is lurking under our noses. Others say that there is no murderer, just some people who were itching to commit suicide. It's odd, since out of all the 4 victims, not a single one was a woman. They were all men who died.

“Marcus, is there something on your mind?”  Jonathan's tone seems both suspicious and worrisome. But why would he have to worry? “Huh? Oh… Nah, it's nothing important. There isn't anything to worry about.” I feel like I'm looking at him weird. Eh, shouldn't be a problem. “Alright then. Meet up here tomorrow at nine o'clock sharp?” “Wouldn't be late for the world, Johnny!” Finally, I can get some rest. Wonder how tomorrow will be.

This walk is taking forever. I thought I knew this city front to back. Guess I don't. “Where in the world am I?”  I need to get back to my house, it's getting dark. “Well, well, well! Look who just happened to get lost!” Wait, a woman? She just came from the alleyway out of nowhere!  I have to admit, she's very beautiful, from the top of her ponytail to the tips of her black high heels.  “What’s a fine lady like you doing out here so late?”  She's coming closer.  “Me? Oh, I do this a lot. I know all the twists and turns of these streets. You seem a bit lost.” Was she stalking me, or did I make it noticeable…? “Erm, yeah… “

“Need some help finding your way back to the main roads?  I can take you there in a jiffy.”  Even the way she talks is pretty!  “Yes, that would be nice, thank you.” She giggled. Did I say something funny? Is there something between my teeth?  “Aw, your face is all red! Might I ask, what is your name? And what particular street are you looking for?”  “Oh! I'm so sorry for that! My name is Marcus, Marcus Watkins. I'm looking for Delancey Street.”  “I'll take you right there. By the way, my name is Adeliyne Tubmann. You can call me Addy, though.”

“It's a pleasure to meet you, Addy!” We've been walking for a while.  I wonder when we'll be there.  “We're here. It was nice meeting you, Marcus. Maybe we'll meet again someday.” This is my chance! “Actually, maybe you’d like to come and hang out with my friend Jonathan and I?”  “Sure! That would be lovely. When and where?”  “Tomorrow at 9 o'clock sharp, meet at Coffee Project NY.”  “I'll be there!”

It's been a week or two since Adeliyne started hanging out with Jonathan and I. She seems to have grown a liking to me. When we walk, she always gets so close to me, like she's purposefully trying to make me flustered.

“Hey, Jonathan, can I try your frap? I never tried it before.”  “Sure! Just don't burn your mouth.”  Why am I all jealous all of a sudden…? It's not like I'm attracted to Addy…right? “Marcus, can I talk to you?”  “Of course.”  He's bringing me to the side. Why doesn't he want Adeliyne in the conversation? “Alright, dude, spill the beans. You like Addy, don't you?”  My face just got all hot out of nowhere.  “I-I-I d-don’t know--”  “Hey, Adeliyne! Come here a second!” I'm practically screaming at him to shut up like I'm still in grade school.

“Yes, Johnny?”  “Marcus likes you!”  Wait, she's… blushing?  What the hell is going on here?  “Oh, he does…? Well, it would be my pleasure to return the favor.  Next Wednesday night at 7:30 at my place sound okay?” “Yep, sounds perfect.”  “Alright, see you soon!”  She's so cute, I can't stand it. “Looks like you got yourself a date, huh, buddy?”  “Shut up, Jonathan, you're never going to find love and you know that.”  “C’mon, dude, you don't need to be that harsh!”  “As long as it gets you to shut your trap.”  “Fine… Cya, buddy. Same place, same time tomorrow!”  Nodding is such a good way to end conversations.

“Your date is tomorrow, Marcus.  Are you ready?”

***

This is it. Today is my date with Adeliyne.  Her house seems pretty far from mine. Almost all the way in New Jersey. Good thing that I'm used to walking long distances, and it's a good thing that taxis exist.  “Hey, am I late?”  Addy looks more beautiful than ever.

“Actually, you're right on time. Come inside.”  For the past 10 minutes or so, we've just talked about our families and whatnot.  But she's bringing up an unruly subject.  “So, Marcus, are you worried about this murderer that's going around killing these men?”  “Not really. It doesn't really bother me unless I know who this killer is.”  “Oh. So, you're not scared?”  “Just because I'm not worried doesn't mean that I'm not scared. I'm still uneasy if something happens in my family with this murderer guy.”

“What if it's a girl?”  “I would treat the situation no differently. Why are you asking so many questions about this?”  “I just wanted your side of it all. Do you like children? I do.” “Of course. Children are adorable. I just love everything about them, despite the amount of poopy diapers…”  “Heh! I guess you've got a point there.”  We talked for a while, and eventually she led me into her room. She whispered in my ear, “Hope you enjoy this.”

Over the past few dates I've had with Adeliyne, I've gotten to know her a lot more.  She's outgoing and kind. Curious but a scaredy cat. She's just peachy, everything a man would want in a woman.

***

“Reports have been coming in about a suspicious woman. Be careful. If you see a woman with a black dress and brown hair, stay alert.”

***

“Dude, you're gonna ask for her hand in marriage?! I’m so excited!” I bought a ring the other day. “It isn't a big deal, Johnny. All it is is just proposing and--”  “Not a big deal my butt! She's totally going to accept!”  “Fine, fine. But I'll do it tonight, since we have a date today.”  “See you soon, buddy!” Ugh, I hate when he gets sing-songy like that.

It's been about 20 minutes since I entered her house. I'm just waiting for the perfect moment to ask her. “Hey, Adeliyne? Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, sugarplum, go ahead.”  “Will you… Marry me?”  It's been a few seconds. She hasn't responded yet. Addy’s face is emotionless. “Addy, are you okay…?”  “You know, Marcus, I've had 4 men stand in that very spot. They've all asked the same question...”

I am so confused. What in the world is happening? “... I never replied to their question. They all stood there with that dumb, confused gaze on their faces, just like you are right now. There was only one reason why we stopped seeing each other. Can you guess what it is?”  It's taking me a bit to answer. “Um… They wanted something different?” “Wrong. They all died!!!”

In a flash of light, all I can see is her neck snapping. It looks so gruesome! But the shrieks from her are much more terrifying. I… I need to get away! I need to run! I need to--

“All men are selfish, greedy whores.”

All I can hear is the ringing in my ears and the sound of monitors. Am I in the hospital? I can hear someone speaking. It sounds like a doctor. “... Yes, he will be okay. How did this happen? Well, we aren't entirely sure yet. We believe that he attempted to commit suicide. There was a butcher knife next to his body. We got a call from someone who heard screaming. He lost an excessive amount of blood from the stomach, the shoulder, and the right thigh.  Both his eyes were also torn out. ”  “Oh my goodness… Please, doctor, let me go in and see my best bud! I just want to see him--”

“This is a Code Death! I repeat, Code Death!”  I'm having trouble breathing. There are footsteps pummeling in my room. Monitors are beeping loudly, though it all sounds so muffled and more like ringing because of the ringing in my ears. I can barely hear what they are saying. My chest is tightening up, I can't inhale.  I'm going to flat line soon. Please. Someone help me…Please…
