The Wish (Short story)

"What if I lose him?"

I knocked on Kaylee's door almost desperately. She opened it with a grin. It fell as soon as she saw my tear stained cheeks.

"Em, what's wrong?"

She rushed me in and I sat on her bed, telling her the whole story. She listened carefully supplying the needed tissues. At the end of my story she grabbed my hand and squeezed it.

"I'm so sorry, Em. For all it's worth, there is no way the genie in your phone is right about Scott."

I wiped away a tear and laid my head against the wall.

Kaylee shuffled closer to me and took a deep breath.

"You really didn't know about Drew?"

I shook my head as more tears fell. "Was it really that obvious?"

Kaylee chuckled. "Yes. He looked at you as if you were the only person in the world who existed. When you would laugh or smile his whole face would light up. It was so obvious, we all figured you knew."

I groaned and slumped against the wall.

"How could I be so blind?"

Kaylee shrugged. She gave me another hug.

"Is that what's really bothering you?"

I shook my head and more tears slipped out.

"I just don't want anything to change."

"Does it have to?"

"Yes. It's going to be awkward now. Kaylee, what if things change? What will I do without him?"

Kaylee looked at me a little exasperated.

"Emily, you like him too. Don't you?"

My defenses rose and I shook my head vigorously.

"No. I mean Drew is nice. Well, more than nice, he's always kind. He's a gentleman and he always protects me. He's selfless and he makes me laugh. . ."

I faded off as I realized what I was saying. I looked at Kaylee and she gave me a small smile.

"You do like him. Why did you reject him?"

My heart was racing and I put my face in my hands.

"I don't want to lose my best friend. What if I lose him?"

"But what if something else happens?" She replied softly.

"What if I ruined it?"

"Only one way to find out."
