Having a god as a parent wasn't all that it was made out to be

Having a god as a parent wasn't all that it was made out to be. Unfortunately for Carol Wheeler, she had to learn that the hard way, with a bloody knife in her hand and a snarl on her lips.

For one, things try to kill you constantly. Day after day, she had to avoid being mauled to death by monsters, or learn exactly what was on the other side of the soil beneath her feet. And that wasn't even the worst of it. If ― by some cruel trick of the gods above ― she perished at the hands of some slimy creature, good works would not save her from staring death in his hollow, cavernous eyes. The real world was much more clever than that. It didn't romanticize the gruesome picture of death by whispering hopes of a heaven in your ears ― rather, it gave you one option: the Underworld. And in a world like that, death's eyes would be the least of Carol's problems.

And another thing ― it's not like she ever got to speak to her mother. Some demigods had cooler moms and dads than others, for sure, and the gods no doubt had their favorites, but for the most part it was radio silence. Which, Carol had to admit, kind of sucked when your dad dropped you at an elite boarding school when you were ten for no other reason than to chase after a celestial goddess that was never coming back.
