It was one of those days were you could sit outside and fall asleep in a field of flowers. The ground was warm, the air was cool, and the sand felt perfect beneath my feet.
I giggled, running around, wiggling my toes in the sand. My h/c hair fluttered about me in the slight breeze, and I shrieked when the frigid water touched my calves.
"Keith," I yelled, throwing myself into his arms. He grinned at me, barely catching my slim body in time.
"Should have let you get a faceful of sand," he joked, chuckling at my pout. I knew he would never do anything like that. We were good friends, and it just didn't fit his personality.
"Come on," I tugged at his hand insistently, like an excited child at the toy store with their mother. I had missed California so much. At the Garrison, there was no sand and water. Just dirt and cliffs. I had never thought someone could surf cliffs, not until I met Keith. Now I was teaching him surfing my way.
We both pulled off our over clothes, him in red swim trunks and me in a f/c colored bikini with shorts for a bottom. I didn't notice the faint blush on his face. We paddled out on our boards, stomach down. I went first to show him. Catching a wave, I beamed. The wind whipped my hair behind me, and I carelessly leaned down to stick my hand in the water. I had forgotten that wonderful sensation: wind in your face as you fly across the water.
After a while of failed tries for Keith, we waded back to the beach. I laughed as he swore at the ocean.
"Don't worry, you'll get it next time," he probably wouldn't but motivation was key in learning something.
"Lets eat," Keith decided, tired from trying to surf. I agreed happily. However, I did not expect my raven haired best friend to hand me a plate of strawberries arranged so that they asked 'be mine?'
"Oh my gods," I gasped lightly, my head shooting up to stare st Keith in wonder. "Do you mean it?"
"Of course, Y/n," Keith said, smiling shyly. I lunged across the picnic blanket and threw my arms around him.
"Yes!" I squealed, delighted to be his girlfriend. Keith chuckled and patted my back.
Our eyes held contact for a long while before Keith gently gripped my chin. I slowly leaned in and close my eyes. Then suddenly I felt rough sand against my face. I shot up and chased after the cackling and wicked Keith running down the beach.
We dashed after each other for hours until I finally caught him. I leaped onto his back, knocking us both to the ground. I stayed there, straddling his back. Keith eventually rolled over, causing me to fall off. He chuckled and helped me up.
His arm wrapped around my waist and my fingers threaded themselves through his mullet. Then we kissed. His lips were on mine and, boy, were they soft. I sighed in contentment before pulling away. His arms stayed around my waist, and we just stood like that for a while. Just the two of us against the universe.

I smile at the memory, picking up the picture in my photo box. If only I had realized that we really would be forced to fight for the universe and safety. If only I had known that ship was going to explode.
"I love you," I say, tears rolling down my cheeks. "I miss you."
