Chapter 40: The Dunbar Beam

Cole and Cassandra split up in Flooded Town, but then Cassie climbs up the rumble of an old building to the top, then looks down as she saw Cole walk up to the Zeke and Laroche were going over the plan they made up for their next move, then Cole walks up to them, "Hey." he calls out and Zeke looks at him "Hey man. You showed up just in time. We're in a bad way here, brother." Zeke answers him as he stood up. Then Cassie stood up as she jumps down. "A bad way? I thought we found a cure for the plague." Cole questions him as Cassie walks up to him. "Cole," she states, gripping his arm, keeping him calm. "Hell, there ain't no cure. Near everyone in Flood Town is dying of it." Laroche informs him.

Getting Cole's attention, "Look all we're trying to do here is ease their plan before they check out." he states and Cassandra turns to him. "But..." she states, taking her hand back. Laroche looks at her and sighs "Only trouble is, anyone trying to pass through town gets jumped before they reach us. Damn swamp monsters!" Laroche informs him. Cole then steps forward as Cassandra crosses her arms and paces a little. "I set up some new defenses around the camp. We ain't got near enough juice to get them going. I was hoping you and Cass could help us with that." Zeke informs them. Cassie steps up and places her hands on her hips. "We're gonna sure as hell try," Cole informs him.

Zeke just nods at them, then the sirens went off, getting their attention. "Well, here we go! Something out there just tripped a motion sensor. You ready to get to it?" Zeke asks them, "I'm on my way." Cole answers as Cassie just cracks her neck. "Let's do this," she mutters and jumps down, then took off running. They both around, to the building behind them "We're getting close." Cole informs him as Cassie pulls herself up. "Good. you're looking for the spotlight I mounted on the roof." Zeke answers him. Cole mounts up, taking hold of then light and shines it down on the ground, finding the swamp monsters. "Alright, found them. What now?" Cole asks. "Shine it on the monsters and burn them to death, what else," Zeke answers him and Cassie was a little confused on the answer. "Say what?" she asks Cole arches it eyebrow at him, "You do know it's a spotlight, right?" Cole asks as he shines the light down on the monsters, burning to death. "I do know that. I'm very aware of that, however, it's a killer UV spotlight! Of Doom! I'm calling it the Dunbar Beam. Shine it on the swamp monsters and you got crispy critters. Anyone else just gets a nice golden brown tan. Maybe a touch of the Melanoma, but hell, they're sick already." Zeke informs him as Cassie raises her arm and fired at the swamp monsters.

Cole shines the light, killing all the swamp monsters, then Cassie stood up and waved at the people. They nod and took off running to safety. Then Cole pulls away and another Siren went off, "Aw man, that's the Alarm on the west side!" Zeke panics. "Calm down, we're on it." Cole informs him and the two took of running, gliding up the powerline and flew over the buildings, making to the other outpost, they climb to the top and Cole took a hold of the spotlight. Cassie looks around then diverted her attention to the roof. "There!" she calls out, Cole looks up and raises the spotlight up, shining it on the Reaver. He dives into the building, trying to get away, but as soon as it resurfaces, Cole shines the light on it again and it dies within seconds. "Oh man, Zeke, this spotlight kicks ass!" Cole states with rejoicing.

"Yeah, you mean the Dunbar Beam?" Zeke corrects him, "I'm not going to call it that." Cole informs him, then more Reavers came and were spitting acid at the people, so Cassie fires at them as Cole shines the light in the Reavers killing them all. "We got more boges on the way." Zeke warns them, then Cole ran to the next spotlight and shines the light down on them, Cassie fires at the swamp monsters "Dammit, there's just too many!" Cole shouts as Cassie was firing Swamp monsters. Then they rushed back to the outpost they were just at, Cole uses the Spotlight and kills off the Reavers as Cassie fires at the swamp monsters "Why won't they just die?" Cassie mutters to herself as the next siren went off "Hang in there Cole, just save as much as you can, we're counting on you." Laroche informs him, then Cole ran back to the other spotlight, "Cassie, you take the south, I'll take this one." he orders, she nods and took off to the other and shines it down onto the Swamp monsters, killing them, they swam around the people, but Cole was able to take them out easily. But too them out, killing them within seconds. "All three sirens, come on." Cole mutters and took off running, he arrives at the spotlight and shines on the Swamp monsters, "Guys, this ain't working." Zeke states "No, you think?" Cassie mutters as she flew over to Cole. "You've all you could out there, Cole. Fall back to the camp. Maybe if we all rally together maybe we can still save this place." Laroche informs them and they race back to the camp where Zeke and Laroche at.

They jump and flew across the roofs and land on the roof of the crumbled building and saw the swamp monsters attack the camp. "Grid your loins, brothers! Here they came!" Zeke calls out as he and Laroche were firing at the monsters, Cole arms himself on the ray gun and Cassie shot at the water, electrifying the monsters. "This is my swamp! Get your own!" Laroche calls out at the monsters, Cassie then pulls her whip free and swung at the monsters. "Crap. I can't get them all!" Cole calls out as more and more swamp monsters were pouring in. "You gotta try!" Zeke calls out and took out ten with her whip.

But then the ice men jump into the fight, "Aw, man, now what? We got enough problems." Zeke questions with a frown. Cassie looks at the ice men and jumps back to the others. Then the ice men fired onto the monsters. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold your fire! They're only attacking the monsters!" Laroche calls out to his men and the ceased firing. Cassie flicks her whip back around her waist and climbs up next to Cole as he pulls away from the ray gun. "Hey! Hey, thanks a lot! You guys are alright!" Laroche calls out, waving at them.

One jumps down from the ice pillar onto the ground in front of them and makes another one. "We don't want your thanks. We want your blast cores," he orders them. Cassie stiffens as she exchanged a shocked look with Cole. "What? You all got blast cores?" Zeke questions Laroche. "I was gonna tell ya..." he starts, but Zeke shook his head at him. "We'd sooner die than give it to your freaks!" he calls out and aims his gun at the icemen.

Cassie and Cole were impressed by Zeke's response to the icemen, "We accept... your terms." the iceman states, then Cole and Cassie jump down and fires at the icemen, "Thanks. Nice choice of words, Zeke." Cole informs him. Cassie threw bombs at them as Cole open fires onto them. Then Cassie cracks her whip and swigs it. Snapping the end onto the ice man's neck and pulls him down from the pillar. Cole laughs as Cassie flips over the iceman, saddling him and punches him in his face, knocking him out and then she stood up and restrains him. Then Cole jumps onto the pillar and swung his amp into the ice man's face, making him flew off and splash into the water, he then places his amp away and fires at the water, shocking him to death.

Once the ice men were taken care of, Cole jumps down and walks over to the three as Cassie flicks her whip back around her waist. "We're in the clear. You and your partners did some real good here tonight. The blast core is yours after you do me one more itty bitty little favor. we'll talk again." Laroche informs them, Cassie crosses her arms. Then the three walk away and stood a good distance from him. "I don't like him." Cassie mutters, then Zeke places his hand on her shoulder, "I know, darling. But you and Cole need those blast cores if you want to get stronger." he informs her. She looks at him and sighs.

Cole sighs at him, "Listen, we do this favor and those blast cores are ours." he informs her and she looks at him and rolls her eyes, "Fine, but if he flirts with me, Kuo or Nix, I am shooting him." she informs them and they both pull their hands back, "It's a done deal." Cole informs her and the two waved goodbye at Zeke and took off from the camp.
