In the City of the Children of Men emotions and sensations are found and expressed online, shared through the net like a spiraling vortex that robs its denizens of their true lives. It is in this last human society that we meet our protagonists: A detective investigates the murder of a victim found in a place no-one goes anymore - the surface of the planet - while he fights his own depressive demons. A prostitute who conducts her business in a virtual world yearns for another life until she meets a man who changes everything. A hacker working for a mysterious rebel faction pursues a woman consumed by her past. In the city of New Babel, the story of these three lives will be connected and interwoven by one selfless act of love.
Dreams of a Red Horizon focuses on these three characters, with each chapter a first person narrative that gives us insight to the mystery introduced in the first chapter. It's a novel of opposites and juxtapositions. It's as much a dark and brooding crime thriller about the victims of post-industrial society as it is a fairy tale. It's about failure and hope, brokenness and healing, bitter reality and sanguine dreams. But mostly, it's about hope overcoming a world full of pain and despair.
Set in a stunningly visionary future, Dreams of a Red Horizon paints a picture of the future that is both beautiful and terrifying. Less than 50 years ago, an explosion destroyed the surface of the planet mankind called home. But in an underground city, the Children of Man live on. New Babel is the last city, and it is captivating. It's filled with breathtaking skylines and glamorous towers and all the wonders of man. But New Babel is as much a dark place as it is filled with light, for many live in poverty and are marginalized by the corporate government.
For most, Sensee is the only escape they have from their lives. A network of implanted devices placed on the central nervous system, Sensee allows the user to see, smell, hear and touch as many digital worlds as the Children of Man can dream of. Nothing in New Babel is real, not the air nor the sunlight, so why not just exchange one fantasy for the other? With this thought, many people live their entire lives connected to the net, dreaming of a red horizon.
