Courtney's P.O.V

What would Shayne want me to do?

As soon as I asked myself that question, I felt myself get pushed backwards onto the ground as the force of a huge explosion interrupted my thoughts.

There was cheering from the soldiers guarding the military vans. That was when I realized there was nothing I could do. I was too late.

"What the hell was I thinking?!" I whispered to myself. "This explosion would've buried the whole facility instead... oh, God..."

I snuck back to the mission van and grabbed my walkie-talkie. "Damien?! Come in, Damien! Mari?! Mari, you copy?! Anyone!"

There was a long pause.

I began to lose hope, and felt myself fall down to my knees.

But then I heard something static, but clear enough. "Oh, thank God you're okay..."

Damien! "Holy shit! The others, are they—?"

"Alive. We found a secret tunnel in Shayne's room. Listen, Courtney... we can't trust Irene."

"I know. I just saw her and a bunch of U.S. soldiers throw Shayne into a truck. About to follow them."

"Great! Well, not great that they have Shayne... but—you know what I mean. Anyways, we all escaped onto this train that we think is headed back to Los Angeles."

"Oh, wait... shouldn't I just try to find you guys? I suppose there isn't any food or water on that train."

"Rescue Shayne first. We don't know how much time he has left at this point. They might torture him when they don't find our bodies in the aftermath."

"I don't think they'll bother searching for any bodies. They'll just make sure that anyone still underground can't get back up to the surface... What about you guys?"

"Whoever's driving the train doesn't know we're on board. We're in one of the carts... all it has is guns and ammo. One of the other rooms might have food."

"Okay. Don't let the driver know you're here until the train stops. You don't want to have to fight them. Has Noah told you about the virus?"

"Virus...?"

I took a deep breath. "Noah and Irene were working on a virus detector and gave me a hard drive to plug into any working device I could find on the surface. Well, that turned out to be coordinates to direct the military to our base."

Damien's P.O.V

My heart skipped a beat.

"Courtney, I'm gonna have to get back to you in a second... just... follow those trucks, okay?"

"On it."

I lowered the walkie-talkie, and set it on the ground. "Son of a bitch..."

"What's wrong?" Olivia asked me. She placed a hand on my shoulder. "Is Courtney okay?"

I stared at the huge metal box in front of me, thinking about my next words. "Y-Yeah," I cleared my throat, "she's going after Shayne."

"I heard you say something about a virus...?"

I turned around. Keith and Noah sat in the corner next to each other. Boze, Joven, and Wes tended to Mari, who was still unconscious.
I was astonished by how Wes managed to pull through all this pain and make it onto the train with us, by the way. Flitz and Ian paced around the room.
