MENTIONS OF SUICIDE AND ABUSE - WARNINGYou walked down the boardwalk with a slow pace. You decided to stop in New Jersey for gas and some snacks after the drive off the back roads. The smell of saltwater and fast food roared into your nose as you made your way down the boardwalk.
While your Sugar lay parked on the toad, you wanted to get up and enjoy the scenery. Watching children yell and run into different stores with their parents reminded them of what your childhood should have been like.
As your stomach growled, you decided to stop and get some coffee. You had planned to being researching on the case as well. Your satchel with your laptop swung with your side as you made your way to one of your favorite spots on the boardwalk.
The little cafe was bursting with life as you walked into it. The breeze of the cool ocean flew in with you as you made your way to the front counter.
When you waited in line, you spotted a small pastry display next to the register. Being you, the decision of getting a pastry was immediate. As you reached the front, you took a deep breath in and decided to order.
"Hi, uh. Can I get a black coffee and a...oh! blueberry muffin please?" You smiled. The cashier looked at you and nodded. He went to the machine and started brewing the dark liquid and then went to the pastry display.
The cashier grabbed what looked like a fresh muffin and put it on the counter. "That will be $8.32 ma'am" he said. You pulled out your credit card and slid it through. Praying it would work, it happily did.
You were still getting used to credit card fraud, your mom always told you to use cash or else you'll get arrested quicker.
Now, your mom hasn't talked to you in over six years. No contact made or even seen. Other hunters have told you that she's doing the same as she always has. Drinking, working, more drinking.
But hey, when she finally cracks your breaking point. After constantly hitting you and almost send you to the hospital. You stopped and finally fought back after at least 25 years of it.
You grabbed your food and waited for the coffee as you opened your computer. After logging on, you went straight to begin research on the job in Vermont.
Burke was a small town in central Vermont. Population was over 1,750, not too bad for a boring old town. It held Darling State Park, which could show the wonderful environment.
The case was in a widely popular diner known as Charlotte's. According to the internet, it was five stars and held the best pie in the county. Your soulmate would have loved to stop by, get some burgers and savor the moment.
You hadn't met them yet, but you hoped it would be soon. Being a lonely hunter got tiring. Yes, you teamed up on hunts with Jo or others. You were missing a family to enjoy things with was all.
The mother you had was a god awful nightmare, and you only knew your father till you were five years old. If you could just have someone or two and be around them. You wouldn't be so shy or lonely anymore.
The cafe worker brought over your coffee and you thanked them. You took the cup and sipped, letting the caffeine slide into your system. This specific cafe was one of your favorites, especially on a case.
As you scrolled through the history of this town, you discovered that the diner had a case in 1958. It was a suicide, but you would have to get more info on that.
Your sources told you that a waitress, in her early twenties, had hung herself. After getting only that information, you decided to wait a little longer on getting the details.
After going to take another sip of your coffee, you realized it was empty. You put the cup down and groaned. The clock in the cafe began to ring, signaling the new hour. It was four o' clock, which told you to get out and onto the road.
Your laptop screen closed and you placed it gently back in the case you had for the thing. You picked up your trash and placed it in the garbage can as you made your way onto the boardwalk.
The New Jersey boardwalk held one of your favorite memories. Your mother, father, and yourself had gone here when you had just turned five years old. The three of you sat on a bunch and tried a bunch of different saltwater taffy.
As your memory soon faded from your mind, you turned to the side and saw your Sugar waiting for you. She shined against the beginning sunset reflected of her windshield.
You walked over and opened the car door. Closing it, you looked to the shotgun seat and saw the small bag of saltwater taffy you bought earlier. The bag smelled of strawberries and other flavors you would try on the ride to Vermont.
You grabbed one and unwrapped it, throwing it in your mouth as you turned the ignition to Sugar. Her engine roared as you began to roll out of the space and back onto the road.
You went to the center panel and clicked the play button. After a few seconds, you heard the beginning chords of an old tune. Humming along, you began to speed down the empty road and toward Vermont.
As you looked down the road, your thread was on a diagonal and went to your left. It was going more inland, which could help you better figure out where he could be.
But here was the thing that shocked you, it was beginning to look weak. Usually, it was always strong and straight. Yet, it was looking like the other end was getting closer to you.
A large smile grew on your face as you began to imagine what would happen if you met your soulmate in Vermont. What if he was a hunter? What if you weren't lonely anymore? You only imagined as Sugar roared her engine and you both sped off down the road.
