Eating seems as impossible as sleep had been. She stares at the food. "A human weapon..." she mutters out loud, before burying her face in her hands.
The next few weeks are filled with lessons in reading and writing. Ami teaches her the names of more objects, and she learns more about both of their backstories. They also begin to form a plan.
In exactly two weeks, Poppy and Ami are going to escape by using Ami's I.D. card to get out from the back door. Ami knows the security guards' schedule, so they will go when all of the guards are at different places in the building. This will be on her way back from testing, as she will pretend to have another dream. The back door is on the way to her room, so workers will just assume Ami is escorting Poppy back. Once they are out, they will run to Ami's old house, which isn't that far away. They will try to locate both of their families while hiding from the authorities that the institution is sure to send after them.  From there on, they will just have to figure it out. In the mean time, Ami will continue to teach Poppy how to function in the real world.
It is the day before the great escape. By now, Poppy and Ami are close friends. Ami grasps Poppy's hands, nervously squeezing them.
"Are you ready?" she asks.
"Nope," Poppy responds, smiling.
Ami chuckles and walks towards the door. She gives her one last reassuring smile before leaving. Now Poppy is alone in her room. She needs to pretend to dream that she is baking a cake. Her bed has motion sensors, so they can tell when she moves in her sleep. She lays still for a little over 90 minutes, the time it would take to start dreaming. When the hand on the pocket watch is at the spot that Ami had pointed to, Poppy sits straight up. She begins to mime opening cabinets. Now for the grand finale, she stands up to "put the cake in the oven". To her surprise, no one comes in. She figures the next best option would be to walk outside, so the security cameras would catch her. As expected, a team of security guards grabs her. But they don't lead her to the testing rooms. They take her back to her room. Confused, but tired, she goes to sleep.
The next morning, Ami is in her room, panicked.
"They've figured it out!
"What?"
"They didn't run any tests last night because they've already figured out how to control your dreams!"
Poppy just shakes her head. They were already planning on escaping today, but if they already have the information, they could still use other people like Poppy.
"I guess that means we have to take their data too."
Ami nods, looking concerned. They both know this will make their task much harder.
