Omololá shivered as she walked around the palace ground. She hissed as she saw some mistresses from Adéoba's harem milling about the kitchens. They were useless, according to the traditions of the land, as they were only able to bear female children and still- born sons. As far as she was concerned, she was still superior to all of them. Her indignation increased as they made no move to greet her, as if she were invinsible. She scoffed and ignored them too, perking up as she saw a guard hurrying her way. She would send him to her maid to get her a shawl. She opened her mouth to give him the order, but screeched as he barreled right through her, forcing her backwards a few steps, She turned and watched him hurry away without a backwards glance with her mouth open.
She walked towards the mistresses and raised her hand to tap one of them, but the girl turned at the last moment and Omololá screamed as the girls shoulder went right through her hand.
"what is happening right now?" she asked herself.
suddenly, there was a flurry of activity and the mistresses started moving towards the building behind Omololá, walking through her as if she was wind and hitting her around like she was made of paper. When she manged to stabilise herself, she turned to follow them, but she was stopped by a hand on her shoulder. She turned, her relief evident that someone could see her and stopped short at the sight before her. Àwèlé was standing in front of her, but that wasn't was what chilled her to the bone. what chilled her was the appearance of her friend. Àwèlé's face was in the state of decomposition, the left side of her face was peeling and her eye sockets were swarming with maggots.
The girl stretched her hand towards Omololá, causing the latter to scream as clumps of skin began to fall of the hand.
"Oh God! s-stay away from m-me! Stand back!" she screamed as Àwèlé - no, the-the body began to shuffle closer to her, she turned and began to run, her body going through bodies and structures in her path, as if she were but a wisp of smoke. She looked back and shrieked as she saw that the body was gaining on her. She grunted as her body collided with another and fell to the floor. She looked up and heaved a sigh of relief as she saw that it was Adéoba before realising that the body was gone.
"Oh thank the gods. Adéoba, i don't know what's going on,but we have to get out of here" she stopped when she noticed that he wasn't replying or trying to help her up, he was just standing there, glaring at her with clenched fists. She frowned at him and stood on her own.
"what is wrong with you now? are your ears clogged with wool or what?"
Adéoba took a step forward and Omololá took one backwards at the mutinous look on his face. He looked angry to kill.
" 'molola! tell me the truth! what have you been hiding from me! Tell me now!" he gritted out
she took some more steps backwards before scoffing incredulously, "i don't know what you are talking about. If you won't help me, stay here and die then!" He suddenly lunged and wrapped his hands around her throat, cutting off her scream."You evil woman! you better come clean before you die. Tell the world what you did!" Omololá struggled and choked under him until he suddenly stopped and stood. He looked behind him and nodded to someone before moving out of the way to reveal Àwèlé's decomposing body, but this time, she was carrying a machete, gleaming in the sun as she turned it in her rotting hands. She stood above Omololá and smiled a toothless smile, for her mouth was empty, and raised the matchete above her head.
"Tell everyone what you've been hiding, or you will die!"
Then she swung the matchete down towards the screaming Omololá's neck.Omololá yelled out from her sleep and clutched her chest to calm the beating of her heart. The guard stationed outside her room, who had been dozing on duty, was jarred into conciousness when he heard the queen's scream. He ran into her room and began to sarch for any signs of danger, "my queen, are you okay?" Omololá turned and glared at the man who was just doing his job,
"did i call for you? ehn? did i summon you?"
the guard was confused, "but, my queen, you were screaming"
"and so? get out of my room." when the guard gave no signs of movement, she yelled "i said get out!"
The man scurried out of the room and went back to his post, muttering about worrisome queens and their mood-swings.
In her room, Omololá clasped her hands together to stop them from trembling, the dream had looked so vivid, it seemed more like reality. She shuddered and snapped her fingers over her shoulder, "The gods forbid it. It will never happen!". But she was still not at peace. If Bódúndé had been there, he would have laughed and told her to stop being paranoid. But he wasn't, so she wasn't leaving anything to chance. It was time to hasten along with her plans.............................................................
Adéoba was also facing his own share of problems. Presently, he was hiding from the angry mob in front of his palace. The people had finally decided to end their suffering. At first, they had quailed at the sight of the menancing guards, but their rage had increased when the palace's defence had been easily overpowered.
"Adéoba must go!" they chanted, waving sticks, matchetes and brooms. The cheifs had been trying to get them to quiet down, but nothing had worked. Even the peaceful women of Oyogun were brandishing oroguns, turning sticks for making swallow food, and stones. Enough was enough! The gods were obviously not in support of Adéoba, why was he still king?
The iyaloja, the leader of the market women turned to the otun, the right hand man of the king "Otun Adewusi, where is the Aareonakakanfo? why isn't he here to stand with the king? Has he defaulted already?"
the Otun shook his head sadly, "Are you not aware of the trajedy that befell him two nights ago?" When the iyaloja showed no signs of comprehension, he continued,
"his whole family died in a fire last night. All of his sons and daughters died, along with his two wives" The Iyaloja gasped, "ye gods! i heard nothing about it, this is sad news indeed. He is now without an heir"
"Not for long" the otun replied,"he is very popular amongst the ladies, there have been reports that there is something going on with him and the queen."
"Ah! Adewusi! ma so oro to ju enu re lo o" do not speak of things that can put you in trouble" what you have said can be termed as treason!"
"Oh alright! " he waved her concerns away,"but you know it's true"
Their gossipping was interrupted by a comotion at the rear of the mob. The crowd parted to reveal the culprit, and there were gasps as the aareonakakanfo staggered to the front, he was obviously drunk, judging by his unsteady movements and the smell of palm wine wafting around him. Adéoba and Omololá had stepped out of the palace to see why the mob had grown silent, but they were unnoticed as the attention was the aareonakakanfo, taking swigs from a gourd of palmwine while swaying on his feet. He was the first to notice the king and queen,
"Ah! Adéoba and Omololá, beautiful day, isn't it?" he slurred out, ignoring the outraged gasps onthe chiefs' faces at his blatant disrespect of the king and queen. But he was only just beginning, his next words shocked everyone even more.
