The taxi ride was short, kind of awkward, and weirdly loud. Luke had been on his phone almost the whole trip with somebody that I didn’t know. He was talking quite loudly and kept glancing over at me to mouth “sorry” as the phone call went on and on.
I didn’t really mind- almost thankful that we didn’t have to have a conversation so I didn’t have a chance to be completely awkward. I was on my phone- texting my two friends who were back at my apartment and on the edge of their seats, wanting to hear everything about the night.
“Alright, okay, bye.” said Luke. He put down his phone and took a huge sigh. “I never thought that phone call would end!” He said, laughing a little. I let out a laugh too, and watched as Luke looked out the taxi window.
Almost on queue, the taxi stopped in front of a gigantic apartment building. Luke whistled in amazement. “Woah,” he said, “this place is nice.”
He climbed out of the car and held the door open for me. I looked up the side of the building, my head tilting far back to see the top.
“Let’s go!” Said Luke. I followed him into the front of the building, two men dressed in suits greeted us and opened up the doors.
“Thank you,” Said Luke, turning around to face me, walking backwards, he covered the sides of his mouth and whispered to me, “This place is so fancy.”
I giggled and continued to look around the lobby. Leather couches, succulent plants and fur carpets littered the room. I looked up at Luke and raised my eyebrows, “very fancy…” I said quietly. He smiled and turned back around to face forward. Smoothly pressing the up button on the elevator and taking a deep breath.
“You ready?” Asked Luke, looking down at me again.
I shrugged, “I guess so.” I laughed awkwardly, I held my own hands in front of me to keep them from shaking on the elevator ride to the 10th floor.
We stepped off on the 10th floor and read the sign in front of us.
“My text says 10B.” Said Luke, clicking his tongue.
“I think it’s this way,” I said, pointing at the arrow on the wall that said B.
“Right,” Luke laughed, “I’m dumb.”
He walked in front of me towards the door, his long legs carrying him faster while my heels were slowing me down significantly.
He stopped in front of the door and turned to me, “Should I put my arm around you or something?”
I shrugged my shoulders and hesitated to link my arm around his.
“Nice thinking,” He said, then knocked firmly on the door.
I took a deep breath and Luke chuckled at me, “You’re fine,” he whispered.
