As we rode down the elevator Luke picked up his phone, “What’s the number for the taxi here again?” he asked me.

“Ummm,” I responded timidly, “We don’t have to take a taxi if you want… there’s a lot of stuff walking distance from here…”

“Oh yeah,” said Luke, “I almost forgot you lived here.” He let out a chuckle and slid his phone into his back pocket. I smiled to myself as the elevator door opened, letting us out on the first floor. I followed Luke out the doors and out the front doors of the apartment building into the San Francisco night.

“It’s actually really nice out here,” Said Luke, stopping in his tracks, “I thought it was going to be freezing.” He smiled down at me and I shrugged my shoulders.

“I guess we lucked out.” I said, moving slowly in the direction I knew all the nearby restaurants were in, still facing Luke as I walked.

“What are we going to eat?” Said Luke, jogging a little to catch up with me, walking beside me now.

“Well what do you feel like?” I asked, looking up at him, he was much taller than me, even with my heels on, he stuck his hands in his pockets.

“Surprise me.” Said Luke, “I’m not picky.” He smirked down at me and I laughed.

I lead him to a small Mexican food place, talking briefly to the waiter who sat us at a small table near the back of the restaurant.

“This looks yummy,” Said Luke, staring down at the menu. Our conversation was short about the food; the uncomfortability between us prevalent as we both thought of the long meal ahead of us. I thought about what my friends would say… Y/N, you totally have to talk to him, like ACTUALLY talk to him, they’re normal people, they like normal things.

I took a deep breath and tried to change the small talk we had solely been sharing.

“Hey Luke,” I said, breaking the silence between us, watching his eyes scanning over the menu.

He responded with a mhmm? Glancing quickly at me and then back down to read.

“So… uh…” I fiddled with the bracelets that clasped around my wrists, “What’s your favorite movie?” I asked quietly, my voice was a bit shaky.

“Oh,” He looked up at me with a thankful smile, “There are way too many to pick a favorite,” he chuckled, lowering his menu so it was laying on the table. He became much more attentive, his eyes locked with mine, shifting his weight to sit up a little straighter.

“How about you?” He asked, still looking at me…

I set down my menu so I could concentrate more on what he was saying…

“This is kind of dumb,” I paused, “but have you heard of the movie Blue Valentine?”

Luke smiled at my meekness and replied, “Oh yeah! I’ve heard of it but I don’t think I’ve seen it…”

“Yeah, I just love the way it’s filmed, it’s kind of dark” I laughed a little… “Not to say I’m a dark person but like, it reminds me of San Francisco.” I laughed again.

“I see,” Said Luke, smiling at me, “I wish I had more time to explore around the places that we visit on tour, but it’s all pretty fast-paced” He said.

I nodded my head, “Why are you in San Francisco then?” I asked, genuinely wondering.

“Actually, I was supposed to meet someone here, but they ended up not coming…. and then that whole thing went down with Angela at starbucks… and now we’re here!” He smiled and looked down at the menu again. He was being vague, but I wasn’t about to question him more about it.
